Roots of English - 22

The Overall pattern of English Language section has changed drastically in the exams conducted last year. To cope with the changing pattern, it is important to have a strong hold over vocabulary. So, in order to help you with this and improve your vocabulary, we are here with another session of our series, 'Roots of English'. Hope this will help your preparation of English language section.

 

English language is made up of four parts. These are -

  • GREEK ROOTS
  • GERMAN ROOTS
  • FRENCH ROOTS
  • LATIN ROOTS

Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.

What is a root?
A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.

How many parts is a word made of?
A word is made up of three parts.

For example - Exported

Here 'Ex' is a prefix, 'port' is the root and 'ed' is the suffix.

Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another.
SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

Case - I

Consider ‘View’ as a ROOT means Look at or inspect

Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,

  • Counterview - An opposing viewpoint
  • Interview - A mutual sight or view
  • Overview - An inspection or overlooking
  • Preview – An opportunity to view something before it is acquired or becomes generally available
  • Review - To view or see again
  • Teleview - To observe or watch by means of a television 
  • Viewer - A person who looks at or inspects something
  • Viewlessly- Giving no view
  • Viewpoint - A person's opinion or point of view
  • Worldview - A particular philosophy of life or conception of the world

Case - II

Root – 'Dict or Dic' means Say

  • Contradict - Deny the truth
  • Dictate- Say or read aloud
  • Dictionary- A reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with information about them
  • Edict- An official order or proclamation issued by a person in authority 
  • Indicate- Point out, show
  • Jurisdiction– The official power to make legal decisions and judgments
  • Predict- Say or estimate that (a specified thing) will happen in the future or will be a consequence of something
  • Verdict - An opinion or judgement
  • Dictator - A ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force
