How to Prepare for ESE 2019 ECE? #1 Best Preparation Tips & Tricks

By Himanshu Mittal|Updated : October 24th, 2018

Engineering  Services Examination (ESE) is one of the most prestigious examinations conducted in India by UPSC. These are the civil services that meet the technical and managerial functions of the Government of India. A large number of candidates take this exam, competing for limited posts. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A combined three-stage competitive examination (comprising five tests), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. IES officers carry high respect and status in society and are able to manage activities in diverse areas.

The nature of work performed by these bureaucrats largely depends on their engineering branch and the service or cadre they are recruited in. However, they can move to any cadre, organization, agency, department, ministry or PSU of the Government of India. They are appointed in the posts analogous to their present one, either on deputation basis which is of a fixed tenure (at least 5 years and extensible) after which the officer returns to their parent cadre or on absorption basis where the official leaves the parent cadre and is "absorbed" permanently into the new cadre.

The number of Expected vacancies in Indian Engineering Services for ECE candidate is around 101 and competition is very high. For a candidate to successfully qualify the ESE Exam, a strategically and carefully planned study routine is vital, with focus and attention on what is important from examination point of view.

key facts about IES Exam Pattern:

  • The exam is conducted in 3 Stages namely Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and Personality Test.
  • The mode of examination is offline i.e. it is a written examination.
  • Questions in Prelims exam are objective in nature.
  • Questions in Mains will have questions of conventional type.
  • The medium of examination is English.
  • In IES, there will be a deduction of one-third of the mark allotted for each question for every wrong answer attempted.

ESE exam unlike other engineering exams, covers the complete engineering syllabus and ESE exam is based on more formula and theory-based questions and thus the focus should be more on memorizing formulas, important theoretical concepts, and prepare the complete syllabus.
