SBI Clerk 2016: English Section Analysis & Expected Cutoff

To get a call for the next phase of the SBI Clerk selection process i.e. SBI Clerk Mains exam, you have to qualify all the three sections (English, Reasoning and Quant) individually and also score well in the exam in the exam to qualify overall cutoff. 

Below is a detailed analysis and expected cutoff of the English Language to help you prepare better for the SBI clerk exam.

English Language

Many of you are comfortable with Reasoning and Quant section but always face difficulty in attempting English section, as it is the most avoided and least prepared section. Most of the candidates are unable to crack banking exam and other exams because they are unable to qualify the sectional cutoff of English section.

To qualify the section, a candidate should have depth knowledge of each topic which can be asked during the exam. This section generally includes questions from topics like – Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Fill in the blanks, Spotting Error, Sentence Improvement & Parajumble.

In the prelim exam, the English section contains 30 questions, of 30 marks. The expected SBI Clerk exam pattern for the English Language Section for SBI Clerk 2016 is as follows:

1. Reading Comprehension – 10 Qs (Moderate & lengthy passage)

2. Cloze Test – 5 Qs (Easy)

3. Spotting Error – 5 Qs (Moderate)

4. Paarajumble – 5 Qs (Easy to Moderate)

5. Fill in the blanks / Sentence Improvement - 5 Qs (Easy to Moderate)

 In – Depth Knowledge of All Topics 

1. Reading Comprehension: In English Language, Reading Comprehension is given in the exam to judge the capability of understanding the passage and to analyse the problem in correct perspective. The questions will not come direct and hence have to understand the passage to answer. Candidates should have a good reading ability for attempting these questions.

2. Cloze test: This is a scoring topic of English language section. 5 questions are asked from this topic and candidate can score 3 to 4 marks easily, if he had good reading and grammatical sense. The candidate has to choose correct meaningful word according to the passage and complete the sentence.

 3. Spotting Error:  This type of questions requires good grammatical sense. The candidate has to find the grammatical error in the sentence. Four to five questions are expected to come in the SBI Clerk Prelim Exam.

4. Para-jumbles: The objectives of these types of sentences are to rearrange the sentences in the original sequence. It consists of a group of sentences that have been jumbled up. Five or Six sentences are given in a random order and you have to un-jumble all of them.

5. Fill in the blanks: 5 questions with double spacing is expected to come in SBI Clerk Prelim Exam. The candidate has to fill in the blanks with a correct word from the given options.

6. Sentence Improvement - In sentence improvement questions a sentence is given with a word or phrase in bold letters or underlined. Four substitutes are given under the sentence as alternatives. The candidate has to find the error in the part that is in bold or underlined. Then find the correct answer from among the alternatives.

After substituting the alternative the sentence becomes grammatically correct. If the given sentence is correct and no substitute is required then the answer is “No Improvement.”

Practice is the only trick to attempt sentence improvement questions. These questions require a good knowledge of common errors, vocabulary, correct use of phrases and overall rules of grammar.

 Expected Cut off

1. The expected cutoff of English section will be around 7- 9 marks in SBI Clerk 2016 Exam. Take a look at the SBI clerk cut off for the previous year for more information.

2. Shortcut to achieve success in SBI Clerk Prelim exam is to find and attempt easy questions first and manage the time very well.

3. You will be in the safe zone if you can attempt 16 – 20 questions with 100% accuracy.

4. Skip all the time-consuming questions and do them later when you are sure that you have attempted as many easy and scoring questions as you can.

5. Drop a question if it is taking much longer than your assigned time-per-question.

Manage Your Time Wisely

If you are weak or average in this section, then always try to aim to attempt the questions with good accuracy, so that you can qualify sectional cutoff.

Time management is very important. It is preferable to devote 15 minutes in English section and try to attempt each question in less than 10 to 15 seconds. This will give you extra time for the more difficult questions that come later.
