JoSAA 2017 - Freeze, Float and Slide

By Rajat Shukla |Updated : July 3rd, 2016

JoSAA 2017 provides a feature of freezing, floating and sliding. Now for all the students, a very imporant aspect of counselling is to understand very clearly what it means to Freeze, Float or Slide a seat allotment.

Let's find out using an example.

Freezing

Candidates registered for the seat allotment process accept the offered seat and also indicates that they are satisfied with the allocated program and do not want to participate or appear in further rounds of seat allocation. Such candidates will NOT be considered in remaining rounds of the seat allotment program.

Floating

Candidates registered for the seat allotment process accept the offered seat, however indicate that if admission for the  program of better/higher preference in any Institute is offered, they will surely accept it. Else, they will have to continue with the currently accepted academic program. Such candidates will be considered in remaining rounds of the JoSAA counselling process

Sliding

Candidates registered in the seat allotment process accept the offered seat and indicate that, if admission to an academic program of better/higher preference is offered within the same Institute (the one they are currently allotted a seat in), they will accept it. Such candidates will be considered in subsequent rounds of counselling.

To make it more clear for the candidates, let us consider an example. Suppose a candidate, Rajat, has filled the following choices online while registering for JoSAA 2017:

PreferenceCollegeCourseProgram
1IITBAerospace EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
2IITBCivil EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
3IITKMechanical EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
4IITHComputer Science EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
5IITBChemical EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
6IITHElecttrical EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
7IIT (BHU)Computer Science EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
8IITKChemical EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
9IITDChemical EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
10IITDProduction and Industrial EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
11IITRElectronics and Communication EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years
12IITDEngineering PhysicsB Tech, 4 Years
13IITMChemical EngineeringB Tech, 4 Years

Now, let's say he is offered a seat in Engineering Physics at IIT Delhi. That is his preference number 12. Let's look at his options:

FREEZING option: Rajat is satisfied with the allocated seat (i.e. option number 12 IITD Engineering Physics in this case). It is final and Rajat accepts and gets the seat. Now he CANNOT participate in further rounds of seat allocation by JoSAA. So Rajat is finally admitted to IITD Engineering Physics.

FLOATING option: Rajat accepts the IITD Engineering Physics (allotted option number 12) seat but wants to wait for a seat of higher preference (i.e., options from 1 to 11) in the subsequent rounds. He will be considered in subsequent rounds of seat allocation program. In the 2nd pr the 3rd round, if he DOES NOT get any of the options from  1 to 11, he still retains the IITD Engineering Physics seat. However, if he gets a seat of higher preference, say, option number 5, IITB Chemical Engineering, he will be allotted the IITB Chemical Engineering seat and he will lose the IITD Engineering Physics seat.

SLIDING option: Rajat accepts the IITD Engineering Physics (allotted option number 12) seat but wants to wait for a seat within the same Institute (IITD in this case) for a seat in a program of higher preference (options 9 and 10). He will be considered in subsequent rounds of seat allocation. In the 2nd (or 3rd) round, if he DOES NOT get either of these two options (viz. 9 or 10), he still retains the IITD Engineering Physics seat. However, if he gets a seat in one these two options, say, IITD Chemical Engineering, he will be allocated the IITD Chemical Engineering seat and he will lose his IITD Engineering Physics seat.

NOTE: Whether Rajat chooses to FREEZE, FLOAT or SLIDE option, his seat in IIT D Physics is assured.
