How to prepare for ESE 2019 Prelims Papers (Stage 1-Objective Papers)

Engineering Services Examination(ESE) Exam is conducted for recruitment to vacancies in Indian Railways, CPWD, Central Water Commission(CWC), Indian Navy, Indian Railways, Indian Defence and such other government departments. Candidates who qualify this examination are posted in key positions in these departments, as Grade-A officer engineers. The ESE 2018 examination paper is conducted for four branches:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering, and
  • Civil Engineering

Stage 1 Information

  • Stage 1 is Objective type and consist of 2 Papers which will be conducted in different sessions.
  • Paper-1 is General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper, and Paper-2 is Engineering Discipline Paper.
  • Paper-1 (General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper) carries a total of 200 Marks for 100 Questions and duration of the exam is 2 Hours.
  • Paper-2 (Engineering Discipline Paper) carries a total of 300 Marks for 150 Questions and duration of the paper is 3 Hours.
  • Only qualified candidates for Preliminary Exam (Stage-1) will be eligible for Stage 2(consists of Paper I & Paper II each of 300 Marks).

The two objective(Prelims) papers included in the paper pattern of Engineering Services Examination (ESE) play a very crucial role. The scoring in the objective papers can be really high as the questions are being asked particularly from some sections in a repeated fashion.

Also some questions are being asked from previous papers directly or by reframing the concepts related to the previous year quesion. So , one can score well if preparation is done according to the requirements of the examination. Following are the tips for the effective preparation of the objective papers of Engineering Services Examination.

Tips & Suggestions

  • Analyse the topics being frequently asked in the previous year objective papers and focussed on those topics first.
  • Maintain some short notes and formula copy which will be very crucial to revise all the key points.
  • And be expert on handy calculations by practising Mock Tests for Prelims Paper as much as possible.
  • Revise the particular terms, Jargons and various technical phenomenon and practice questions regarding it.
  • Mark the topics in notebook/book that are coming frequently on objective Mock Test papers and revise them first rigorously before the exam.
  • For some topics which are in the syllabus of ESE but not given in text/book and questions are being asked from them in the examination, search for the content on Web and other resources and work upon it.
  • Practice previous year questions at least 3 to 4 times before the examination.
  • Go through the solutions and the theory given in the form of a solution.
  • Revise all notes(short notes and formula notes) 2 to 3 times before the exam.
  • Never do Wild guess while practising objective questions. Even a single question may cost you the selection.
  • Maintain a proper time frame and try to simulate the exam environment while attempting full length paper.
