By Neeraj Mishra|Updated : June 21st, 2020

This article mentions the best preparation strategy for verbal ability in CAT 2020 exam. It is usually considered that the sections where the candidates face the issue in dealing majorly with the Verbal Ability section. So, here we will teach you today how to break your preparation in smaller segments and then hit one at a time.

CAT Verbal Preparation Tips

Though it is most important to understand the contextual meaning of words in RCs and even in usage questions, which are frequent in CAT these days, and logical inferences are good enough. It does not hurt to know important words. The best way to learn words, by popular opinion, is through etymology and Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis. It is one of the books that has stood the proverbial test of time when it comes to CAT preparation.

Also, the familiarity with words increases the reading speed in RCs and also helps a candidate with exams like SNAP and MICAT which are intensely focused on the verbal section. Each of the sections, Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, have been dealt with individually focusing on the subsections that they have below:

Verbal Ability

The natural idea and inclination for anyone is to learn or rather memorize 1500-3000 words as it is kind of hip that way but there is absolutely zero retention, which is the most important, when the words memorized are not used in a sentence, in either the spoken or the written form. That is perhaps why the stories of ‘Bloggers belling the CAT’ is so common these days. The other way to use the words is, provided there is sufficient time for the candidate, to join a public speaking forum like Toast Masters. The prepared speeches in the organization is a good way to use all the words learned by a candidate.

CAT Synonyms and Antonyms

Word Power Made Easy is one of the best ways to start. The candidate can continue by playing Hangman if it is an android phone, some other websites are freerice.com, a part of the WHO, which has a particular word limit to reach 500 grains of rice that could be donated to the poor elsewhere in the world.

Nonsensical words

This section deals with non-sensical words that are present instead of the word providing the right sense. The options typically comprise of words that provide the essential contextual meaning.

Usage

These questions demand the taker to understand the context of the sentence and fill in the missing word. This section may contain vocabulary based questions (words not being really tough) or grammar-based questions which expect a candidate to correct the word or the placement of the word in a sentence or identify the wrong part of the sentence. This section is usually attempted by a great many candidates and anyone who wishes to score well would be expected to attempt a cream of these questions.

Critical Reasoning

The type of critical reasoning questions that are difficult and have appeared less frequently in CAT is the I, N, F, J questions (Irrelevant, not related, Fact, Judgement) and The Upstream Downstream Questions. These questions need to be given minimum time and a candidate can consider them indisposed once he or she gets a hang of these questions. The important sub-sections of critical reasoning are the questions that ask for a conclusive sentence or an inference based answer below a small paragraph type question. This understanding also helps in the inference based questions for tough RCs. In short, answering these questions right is the difference between a 95+ percentile and a 98+ percentile.

Jumbled Sentences

This section just demands two things from the candidate: sound logic and regular practice. It is one of the most doable section of VA in CAT.

Bottom Line

Working with past CAT papers and Mock Follow-Ups, this section is an ace through.
