Plastic Analysis

By Shreya Laddha|Updated : December 3rd, 2021

Through Champion Study Plan for GATE Civil Engineering (CE) 2022, we are providing Plastic Analysis study notes and other important materials on every topic of each subject.

These topic-wise study notes are useful for the preparation of various upcoming exams like GATE CivilIESBARCISROSSC-JEState Engineering Services examinations and other important upcoming competitive exams.

The article contains fundamental notes on the "Plastic Analysis"  topic of the "Steel Structures" subject.

Load Factor = Factor of safety x Shape factor

λ = FS × α

Reserve Strength (Ψ)

  • It is the ratio of the ultimate load Wu to the load at first yield Wy of the structure. image008

Length of a Plastic hinge (Lp)

  • It is the length of the beam over which the moment is greater than the yield moment (My).

(a) For simply supported beam carrying a concentrated load, length of plastic hinge is given by

(b) For simply support beam carrying UDL length of plastic hinge is given by

Where ∝ is shape factor and L is the total length of the beam.

  • The length of plastic hinge depends on loading and geometry.
