Boats and Streams

This is one of the less time consuming and scoring topics from miscellaneous category. Here again, you need to go through a few basic formulas and you can easily attempt this topic within a minute in the IBPS Clerk exam. First and foremost, understand a few basic terms from this topic-

Upstream: When the boat/ swimmer moves against the current of the river (i.e. in opposite direction), then the relative speed of the boat is the difference of the speed of the boat and stream. It is known as upstream speed.

Downstream - When the boat/ swimmer moves with the current of the river (i.e. in the same direction), then the relative speed of the boat is the sum of speed of boat and stream. It is known as Downstream speed.

Remember, when speed of boat is given then it means speed in the still water, unless it is stated otherwise.

Some basic formulas -

  • If the speed of boat/ swimmer is x km/hr and the speed of stream is y km/hr, then,

Speed of boat Upstream = (x - y) km/hr
Speed of boat Downstream = (x + y) km/hr

  • Speed of boat in still water  = ½ (Downstream Speed + Upstream Speed)
  • Speed of stream  = ½ (Downstream Speed – Upstream Speed)

Remember the formulas above and you will be able to attempt these questions easily.

Probability

In simple terms, the probability may be defined as the quality or state of being probable i.e the extent to which something is likely to happen or be the case. You will usually find a question or two from this topic in the IBPS Clerk Exam. It is essential to understand some common terms used here before going deeper into the topic.
