CAT 2016 GD/PI Preparation | GD/PI Etiquettes

By N Shiva Guru|Updated : January 14th, 2017

CAT 2016 Results are out and so are the mails to those who have been shortlisted by the IIMs. Soon those shortlisted by SIBM, SCMHRD, XLRI, XIMB, IITs and the like would be notified. There is only one question going about every CAT 2016 aspirant's lips: How do i prepare for GD/PI and more importantly How do i crack GD/PIs?

Inattentiveness towards your peer

byjusexamprep

Not a lot of us want to hear out what our peers even normally. Here it is a competition, a crucible to edge on another out to be heard, recognized and selected. However, signs like furiously writing when your peer is talking, looking elsewhere, staring into infinity or simply being inattentive are signs of disrespecting your peers which is a very strict NO-NO.

Stop awakening the Grammar Nazi

byjusexamprep

A criminal mastermind in the recent bombing in Norway announced his arrival at a court hearing with a typical ‘Hail Hitler’ Nazi salute. There are many of us who are absolutely intolerant to poor grammar. Yes, the convenor may like good grammar but he/she certainly would NOT like you correcting your peer’s grammar. Please leave your elitist attitude outside the GD room.

Lone Wolf Syndrome

There might be a topic about which you may know everything and you would want to speak for more than 5 times in a GD, with each talk more than 1 minute each when the whole GD might be for 10 minutes (ideally make it 3-4 times speaking for 40 seconds each). This maybe accompanied by very undesirable body language like a sudden stentorian voice, irritability which may lead you to cutting people off in the middle of their own conversations. Take it through to your mind that you cannot be the lone speaker and hold the key to all the effective points. (we are considering a scenario where each one is as smart as you if not more)

Losing your temper

This often happens when someone disagrees with you especially if it has something to do with values. The first rule in these cases is to not lose your temper. Even in Godfather, Alpacino says ‘do not hate your enemy’. (Not that any of your peer is your enemy but that you should not hate any of their opinions if you have are planning a rebuttal. But even rebuttals have to be thought of ONLY if it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Please remember that it is a GD, not a debate)

Eye Contact

Looking into the other person’s eyes denotes confidence; looking down or looking elsewhere while talking denotes the lack of it. So, if you find it uncomfortable to look into a person’s eye, look at his/her nose.

Shaking your legs

Do not shake your legs as it denotes impatience. The best way to avoid this is to rest your arms on your thighs and sit slightly leaning forward in your chair.

Other GD/PI Hacks

Here are some of the miscellaneous yet useful tips for both GD/PIs

  • Give your resume/file/profile sheet with both your hands: the panelists will receive it with more respect
  • Smile once in a while so that you don’t come across as marble faced
  • Here is a very important one: have the right diet before an interview: food is very essential for your mind to think

Hope we have cleared most of the misconceptions, All the very best, Cheers!!
