SSC CHSL Tier 1 Exam Cumulative Analysis for 2016-17

Dear aspirants,

With nearly two weeks of the SSC CHSL tier 1 exam for 2016-2017 now over, we here are providing you with the collective analysis for the exam for these past two weeks.

The exam has till now gathered only moderate reviews for its level of difficulty. The exam which is being conducted for recruitment in the posts of LDC, DEO, clerk and postal assistants is scheduled till 8th of February 2017.

The exam will take place in three shifts for each of its schedule, with the shifts starting from 10AM, 1:15PM and 4:15PM, and lasting for a composite time of 75 minutes.

The overall analysis here is being suggested based on the reviews that have been gathered from your discussions and peer reviews only, so in case of any discrepancies/shortcomings, you are suggested to let us know about them at the earliest, so that we may correct them aptly.

We now start off with the review

The exam has four sections, which are:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning
  • General Awareness
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • English Comprehension

Each section has a total of 25 questions, making the paper have 100 questions in totality. We will tackle each section individually now, outlining the types of questions being asked, along with the level and the topics which reigned in the sections.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

Topics covered primarily are:

  • Odd One Out/Classification
  • Alphabet/Numerical Series
  • Venn diagrams
  • Distance and Directions
  • Syllogisms and Statements and Conclusions
  • Matrix Based

Keep in Mind:

Candidates are advised to definitely go through these topics as these were invariably present throughout the shifts in the two weeks.

Also, candidates should observe that these topics are not exhaustive. These are just the few topics from which questions were predominantly asked. You are thus also advised to go through the other topics for this section, once you are done with these topics.

General Awareness

A topic which used to be neglected by many candidates, gained immense popularity this session. The GK section although it encompasses vast subtopics, a few remained the favorite for the examiners these two weeks, which are enlisted as below:

  • Biology:
    Asked questions based on Classification of organisms. The topic of diseases also remained popular in the first week.
  • Physics:
    Questions remained puzzling at times, but maintained a moderate level. The increase to moderate level for physics can be attributed to a little above average knowledge required for tackling this section. Candidates should definitely try to focus on important laws of physics.
  • Famous Indian authors:
    Books authored by prominent historical figures were put forth in the questions.
  • Chemistry:
    A basic 10th grade knowledge about types of reactions is necessary. Also, one must positively brush up the skills regarding the materials and their corresponding ores.
  • Geography:
    Question based on wildlife sanctuaries, along with a focus on temples and the corresponding temples. Rivers and mountain ranges also remained popular during the shifts
  • Polity:
    Questions based on Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha seats. Also, questions pertaining to age limits and restrictions were popular. Candidates are also requested to go through the constitution related details as this topic also gained traction these past weeks.
  • Economics:
    Mildly focused on basics only.
  • History:
    Immensely popular topic. Questions ranged from various dynasties to famous monuments. Also, important birth and death dates of historically important figures remained important
  • Computers:
    A basic knowledge is all that is required. Focus on various acronyms and basic well known popular facts.
  • Static GK:
    Remained variable. Although a question based on inventions and discovery were always asked in all the shifts.
  • Current affairs:
    Focused on Oscar awards for the first week, which then moved to Nobel and then finally to Sports awardees for the second week. The pattern yet again shifted to National film awards for the latter part of the second week.

 Quantitative Aptitude

Topics that remained popular are as follows:

  • Trigonometry:
    Questions based on knowledge of quadrants and signs of trigonometric ratios. Candidates should definitely brush up their skills on trigonometric identities, with a focus on multiplicative identities.
  • SI and CI:
    The level kept on changing from easy to moderate, but a question based on the topic remained present in the examination.
  • Data Interpretation:
    Bar graphs, Line graphs and pie charts were generally asked. Although candidates are again advised to practice all the types of different questions for DI
  • Profit and Loss and discounts:
    Remained popular both the weeks. Maintained an easy level
  • Time and Work:
  • Ratio and Proportion
  • Mensuration:
    2D mensuration was primarily asked. Focus on general formulae would help improve this topic.
  • Algebra:
    Maintained a mixed level. Candidates should familiarize themselves with tricks and short cuts to quickly solve these questions which would otherwise take a lot of your precious time.

English Comprehension

Questions from these topics definitely graced the question paper for each of the shifts for the two weeks:

  • Cloze Test/Passage Test:
    Maintained a moderate to difficult level for most of the sessions. Candidates should definitely work on this section.
  • Vocabulary:
    In general, a candidate is advised to improve this section for gaining an upper hand in this section. This would help in making this section easier once the text becomes easily comprehended.
  • Synonym and Antonym:
    Maintained an easy level through all the shifts
  • Idioms and Phrases:
    Remained popular through all the shifts. Some complained of this topic becoming moderate in a few shifts
  • Narration and Voice:
    An important topic which needs to be covered. Remained present with an easy level
  • Spelling Correction
  • Sentence correction
  • Error detection
  • One word substitution:
    Came in the latter part of the week. Remained moderate, owing to difficult vocabulary.
