The major bank notification of the year, SBI PO is already out. To help you all score better in this exam, we have started this series of  ‘SBI PO Preliminary Exam 2017 Smart Study Plan’. Today we are going to share the Week 2 Study Plan for SBI PO Prelims Exam.

Apart from your personal studies, do follow this study plan as well.

SBI PO 2017 Prelims - Week 2 Smart Study Plan

As already mentioned, there is no sectional time division in the prelims phase, so you need to manage your time smartly and efficiently among different sections to make sure that you clear the sectional as well as the overall cutoff.

Ideally, you should divide your time among the three sections as given below -

Subject

Time that should be allotted

English Language

15 minutes

Quantitative Aptitude

25 minutes

Reasoning Ability

20 minutes

You may vary the above time as per your comfort level of different sections. Now, let us start with this week’s study plan. Also, have a clear understanding of the exam pattern and the SBI PO syllabus.

English Language

Last week, we covered Cloze test and Sentence Improvement in this section. For Week 2, we will focus on Spotting Errors.

Spotting Errors

Questions from this topic may be asked in a number of ways. For instance,

  • The normal pattern, where you are given a single sentence and you need to identify which part of the sentence is incorrect.
  • You may be given different sentences in the given options and asked to identify the sentence that is grammatically correct or incorrect among them.
  • The Same sentence may be given to you in 4-5 different ways and you need to identify the correct one.

Now, there may be numerous ways to present a question but if are clear with the basics, attempting the question becomes comparatively easy. For this topic, apart from the sentence structure, it is essential that you have a clear understanding of the grammar rules.

Rules

Example

The verb in the sentence must comply with the subject of its sentence. A singular subject takes a singular verb while a plural subject takes a plural verb.

a) The school is closed today.

b) The schools are closed today.

Clearly, in the first sentence, school is singular and hence a singular verb accompanies it. The similar concept goes for the second sentence.

If two or more subjects are connected by ‘and’, then usually a plural verb is used with them.

a) My novel and notebook are on the shelf.

Here the two subjects, ‘novel’ and ‘notebook’ are connected through ‘and’ and hence a plural verb accompanies them.

If two singular subjects are connected by ‘either/or’ or ‘neither/nor’, they usually take a singular verb. If either of the one subjects is plural, the verb will be plural

a) Either Saturday or Sunday is off this week.

b) Neither the teachers nor the students were ready for the proposed change.

As you can see, in the first sentence, both singular subjects, Saturday and Sunday are connected by either - or and hence are followed by a singular verb.

In the second sentence, one of the subjects, teachers is plural and hence a plural verb is used.

If the subject is followed by words such as, ‘besides’, ‘not’, ‘as well as’,’along with’ etc, then the singular verb will follow singular subject.

a) The teacher, along with the students, is present in the class.

Here the subject teacher is followed by along with and is followed by a singular verb.

Sentences that begin with ‘each’, ‘everyone’ and ‘anyone’ will have a singular verb.

a) Everyone has to submit the assignment.

b) If anyone has any doubts, contact the teacher after the class.

c) Each one of you has to attend the seminar.

In the above examples, everyone, each and anyone are followed by singular verbs.

The difference in the usage of ‘I’ and ‘Me’ -  Both I and me are 1st person singular pronouns. However, I is a Subject Pronoun whereas me is an Object Pronoun.

a) Ria and I went for the movie.

b) Priya asked Ria and me for the movie.

In the first example, I along with Ria is the subject of the sentence. In the second example, Priya is the subject and me is the object pronoun.

Do not forget to look up for error of repetition, also know as redundancy.

a)  Sneha returned back from the concert.

In the above sentence, the error is in the part ‘returned back’, which is repetitive. The correct sentences would be -

Sneha returned from the concert. Or,

Sneha came back from the concert.

Modifier related errors - Ensure that the participle in the sentence is not without the subject.

a) Ritesh visited the place where Shahjahan was imprisoned during his holidays.

If you go through the sentence, it seems that the participle ‘during his holidays’ is used for Shahjahan and hence makes the sentence incorrect. The correct sentence should be -

During his holidays, Ritesh visited the place where Shahjahan was imprisoned.

The difference in the use of few and less - Few is used for countable nouns whereas Less is used for the uncountable noun.

a) There were few guests at the venue.

b) There was less time left for the exam to finish.

In the above examples, guests is countable and hence few is used for it whereas time is uncountable and so is used with less.

Reasoning Ability

Note -

  • Make sure that you devote sufficient time to each section regularly i.e. a minimum of 2 hours for each section every day. Figure out the time from your schedule where you can devote 2 hours for each section at a stretch and then prepare that topic within that time.
  • Practice more with SBI PO previous year question papers and analyse your mistakes.
  • Devote another 1-1.5 hours for quizzes or mock tests.
