Admissions in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is one of the primary aims for every science student who aims for Engineering as the career option. Many candidates are successful in achieving their dream while others opt for various other institutes. Once the graduation is completed, engineering candidates have another opportunity to apply for various courses offered in IITs. Candidates having good GATE score may apply for admission in M.Tech or Research programs in IIT's with the following details:

  • Candidates are having with a valid GATE score can get admission in M.Tech (TA) programs either through direct admission or performance in written test/interview.
  • Candidates can also apply to research programs with or without a GATE score. Only exceptional candidates will be selected who perform well in written tests/interviews.

Admission in M.Tech (TA) and Research programmes in most IIT include written test/ interview along with GATE score, so candidates must prepare well for it and should have the proper preparation strategy for it. The following tips are useful for both M.Tech (TA) and Research (M.Tech (RA) / MS / PhD) written tests and interviews.

How to prepare M.Tech (TA) Written test / Interview?

  • M.Tech interviews will test basic skills in 4 to 5 subjects.
  • Prepare interested and important 4 to 5 subjects to face IIT interviews.
  • Prepare the same GATE syllabus for written tests and interviews.
  • Read the articles for previous interview questions.
  • Understand all the important topics from the selected subjects.
  • Prepare the topics from the selected standard books.

How to prepare M.Tech (RA)/ MS / Ph.D Written test / Interview ? (Research)

  • Research interview mainly focuses on understanding and depth knowledge of candidates in the interested and relevant applied program.
  • Prepare to answer the questions from the projects done during B.Tech/B.E.
  • Research interviews will test fundamental skills from 2 to 3 subjects essentially.
  • Prepare GATE syllabus from the chosen preferences and also know about the research importance in the same field.
  • Continue the GATE preparation even after the exam to face the written test and interviews.
  • Read the topics from standard books and read all important theorems and proofs along with examples.
  • Candidates already having research exposure can get admission easily.

Note: Almost all IITs / IISc interviews will be similar but may change the preferences of the questions asked. All answers must be explained without any ambiguity from known concepts.

The following list of subjects/topics is important for IIT interview preparation. It is not the final list, but the actual preparation of the subjects and topics depends on your (research) interest and course applied in the IITs. Engineering Mathematics questions will be asked in all specialisations.

Note: Selection of the subjects should depend on your interest and the courses applied in IIT as most of the questions will be asked on those subjects from basic to high level.

You may use the following resources for preparing Interviews:

  • NPTEL lectures
  • IIT course lectures
  • Standard textbooks

Important Skills for M.Tech & Research

The following qualities are important for M.Tech (TA):

  • Candidates should have a valid GATE score.
  • Candidates should have good knowledge of the relevant department.
  • Sound technical skills
  • Good understanding of core subjects and mathematics

The following qualities (some) are important for Research:

  • Candidates should have an exceptional background in B.E/B.Tech/etc.
  • Candidates who have a good GATE score
  • Research exposure during or after the undergraduate program
  • Project knowledge in an undergraduate program
  • Sound technical skills in any specialisation
