SBI PO 2017 Prelims - Week 6 Smart Study Plan

Let us now start with the topics of different sections -

English Language

In the previous weeks, we have covered almost all the major topics that are expected to be asked in the Prelims exam. These are -
1. Cloze test
2. Sentence Improvement
3. Spotting Errors
4. Reading Comprehension
5. Para Jumbles
6. Fill in the blanks

This week, we will try to focus on Vocabulary section of SBI PO Syllabus.

Vocabulary -

  • A good vocabulary is essential to clear any exam, because unless you actually understand the meaning of the word, it will be difficult to attempt the question.
  • To improve your vocabulary, try to read at least 3 - 4 articles from the newspaper or a novel on a regular basis.
  • Reading newspaper has a dual advantage, it will not only bolster your general knowledge but also widen your vocabulary by helping you learn a lot of new words.
  • We publish our series, ‘Shape up your vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’ regularly and ‘Weekly Editorial Picks for the English Language’ on Sundays. Make sure that you go through these posts to have a good hold over vocabulary.

Weekly Editorial Picks

  • Make sure that you look up the words provided in the articles. Try to form sentences on your own with these words.
  • Don’t shy away from speaking in English. Try to converse with your family members or friends in English. Don’t fret over making mistakes and don’t be consumed by the opinion of others. It’s okay to make mistakes because they will only help you learn.
  • Besides online preparation, if you’re also looking for some books then you can go for Word Power made easy by Norman Lewis (for vocabulary), Objective General English by S.P. Bakshi and Grammar book by Wren and Martin.

Reasoning Ability

In the previous weeks, we covered the following topics-

  1. Coding - Decoding
  2. Inequality
  3. Puzzles and Arrangement
  4. Blood Relations
  5. Direction based problems
  6. Data Sufficiency
  7. Alphanumeric and Numeric Series

This week, we will focus on Syllogism.

Syllogism -

  • The Syllogism is a major topic of reasoning ability, that is asked in Prelims as well as Mains Exam.
  • Last year, there was a major pattern change that was introduced in this topic. The conclusions were given in the question and the different statements were provided in the options. You had to identify for which among the given statements, conclusions in the question followed logically.
  • For such questions, since you already know that you need to look up statements for which the given conclusions will be definitely true, so clearly, there will not be any scope for possibility scenario.
  • You may proceed by drawing the Venn diagram of conclusion first or statements first, depending upon your convenience.
  • Meritshine will also share a video lesson on Syllogism based on New Pattern today to help you all understand this topic better.
  • Meanwhile, you can go through the link below to understand the basic approach of this topic -

This week, we will cover Profit and Loss

Profit and Loss

  • Profit, Loss and Discount is yet another crucial topic of Arithmetic section of Quantitative Aptitude.
  • You may also find the application of this topic in certain Data Interpretation questions as well.
  • Keep following things in mind while preparing this topic -
Cost Price - The price at which an article is purchased, is called its cost price. It is abbreviated as C.P.
Selling Price - The price, at which an article is sold, is called its selling prices, abbreviated as S.P.
    Profit/gain = SP – CP
    Profit % = Profit/(C P)×100
    S P = (100+gain % )/100  ×C P
    C P = 100/(100+gain %)×S P
Loss - If the overall Cost Price exceeds the selling price of the buyer then he is said to have incurred loss.
    Loss = C P – S P
    Loss % = LOSS/(C P)×100
    S P = (100-loss %)/100×C P
    C P = 100/(100-loss %)×S P
