English language is made up of four parts. These are -
- GREEK ROOTS
- GERMAN ROOTS
- FRENCH ROOTS
- LATIN ROOTS
Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.
What is a root?
A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.
How many parts is a word made of?
A word is made up of three parts.
For example - Exported
Here 'Ex' is a prefix, 'port' is the root and 'ed' is the suffix.
Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another.
SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
Case - I
Consider ‘For’ as a ROOT means Completely (used to intensify the meaning of a word)
Now with the help of this one root you can come out with conclusion of several other English words. Such as,
- Forbidding - Unfriendly or threatening in appearance
- Forfeiture - The loss or giving up of something as a penalty for wrongdoing
- Forelock - A lock of hair growing just above the forehead
- Forefather – A member of the past generations of one's family or people, an ancestor
- Forecast - Predict or estimate (a future event or trend)
- Formulate - create or prepare methodically
- Fortress- A military stronghold, especially a strongly fortified town
- Forceps - A pair of pincers or tweezers used in surgery or in a laboratory
Case - II
Root – 'Histo' means Tissue
- Unhistorical - Not in accordance with history or with historical analysis
- Sociohistorical - Of, relating to, or involving social history
- Schistose - (of metamorphic rock) having a laminar structure like that of schist
- Psychohistory - The interpretation of historical events with the aid of psychological theory
- Historicize - Treat or represent as historical
- Historians – An expert in or student of history, especially that of a particular period, geographical region, or social phenomenon
- Histones - Any of a group of basic proteins found in chromatin
- Histolysis - The breaking down of tissues (e.g. during animal metamorphosis)
