What to do after B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering/I.T?

Every Computer science engineer has plenty of opportunities in the world to start a career. It is the right time to know the opportunities when you are an undergraduate or after completion. In this article, BYJU’S Exam Prep provides all kinds of paths you may choose after completing undergraduate CS and IT. Choose your interesting path from the various ones given below, then make a plan and preparation to achieve your goal. After your undergraduate, you may choose a job or higher education. As there are many job opportunities and higher education programmes, you must look into interesting ones. Opportunities with Higher Degrees in Computer Science & Engineering

You may choose one of the following postgraduate programs to start your career in interesting fields. 

M.Tech / MS in IITs: It is the best option to seek a good computer science career. IISc, almost all IITs offer these two programmes, and only M.Tech is offered in NITs. After completing your M.Tech/MS, you may apply to any interested organizations for jobs or research work. It is easy to get a job or PhD after these two programmes. M.Tech is 2 years programme, and MS is 3 years programme. Some of the IITs also provide M.Tech 3 years programme. 

Direct PhD: This programme is recommended for those interested in research. You may be required to work for 2 years of coursework and a minimum of 3 years of research work to complete the PhD programme. It takes a minimum of 5 years to complete the programme.
Dual Degree (M.Tech + PhD): It is also similar to PhD; only the difference is that you will get both degrees, including M.Tech and PhD.

MBA: This programme is good for candidates interested in management courses. In India, IIMs provide good opportunities for MBA, and various private universities provide good opportunities after MBA.

MS in foreign universities: You may also study the MS programme in foreign institutes after BE/B.tech. Ample opportunities are available after this degree. After the MS programme, you may work abroad or be eligible to work in India. The USA, UK, Singapore, Japan, Canada and Malaysia are popular destinations to study for a higher degree abroad.

PG programmes in foreign universities: Other PG programmes are available in foreign institutes after B.E/B.Tech. You can also apply for those PG programmes based on your interest. 

Higher Education through Entrance Exams

The following entrance exams allow taking admission to postgraduate programmes.

GATE, BITS Pilani, GRE, GMAT, CAT, TIFR, TOEFL, IELTS, IIIT Hyderabad (PGEE), other private university exams, and statewide PG exams.

Opportunities after Higher Degree

Higher education provides the knowledge to choose the best career in the relevant field. You can start your career in any of the following fields:

(i) Higher Education for good jobs: You can choose a job in any field of software, teaching, research, management, and other fields. Basically, y you will get a good salary after your higher degree in good institutes. As a result, 70 to 80 per cent of higher degree candidates choose this path to start their career.

(ii) Higher Education for startups: Higher degree provides the best qualification and good knowledge to start your entrepreneurship to provide product-based or service oriented.

(iii) Higher Education for Teaching: Postgraduate programmes can build your fundamentals and helps to build depth of knowledge in the field. You may start teaching to share your knowledge and learn continuously in the teaching field.

(iV) Higher Education for Research: Some PG programmes also help start your career in the research field. You can join research organizations to work in interesting research fields.

Areas in Computer Science & Engineering

After BE/ B.Tech, there are many areas where you may be interested in any of the focus of your career. New ideas are developed every day. Success will require an ongoing commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and a dedication to push beyond the comfortable to explore, innovate, and create. Here’s a list of career opportunities for computer science graduates: 

Software Engineering, Theoretical computer science, Computer Architecture, Mobile Computing, Computer Networks, Network Security, Information Technology, Game Theory, Machine learning, Data mining, Operating Systems, and more.

Opportunities without a Higher Degree

There are a lot of good job opportunities after undergraduate (BE / B.Tech). You can choose any of the following possible opportunities and start your preparation for the exams and interviews.

i) Campus Placements: If you are in the final year of undergraduate and your institute has campus placements, you can prepare for it to get the job. Many institutes in India provide jobs for their students through campus placements.

ii) Off-campus jobs: You can also try off-campus jobs by applying to the individual recruitments of government and private organizations.

The following jobs can be applied for if you have completed your BE / B.Tech:

a) Software Jobs: You may apply to follow software companies where recruitment happens every year. You may visit the career/recruitment section on individual websites to know the openings for freshers every year.

Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, IBM, Oracle, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, CISRO, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Intel, Dell, Canon, HCL, HP, Adobe, Tech Mahindra, Lenovo, Asus, Flipkart etc.

b) Research Jobs: The following research organizations offer research jobs with undergraduate eligibility.

BARC, DRDO, ISRO, CSIR, Scientist or research posts in IITs and research institutes, etc.

c) PSU and government Jobs: PGCIL, ONGC, BBNL, DMRC, IOCL, NLC, BSNL, NTPC, HAL, BEL, Air India, NIC, ITI Ltd, Indian Air force, LIC, CIL, Indian Navy, Defence jobs, Civil services, state PSUs, other govt state and central jobs.

These jobs can be recruited through GATE, SSB, AFCAT, State PSU exams, SSC, Civil Services Exam, UPSC exams,

d) Banking Jobs: These jobs are easier to crack through exams such as IBPS, SBI, RBI, and more. Thousands of jobs are notified yearly from banks, and almost all jobs are eligible to apply through B.E /B.Tech

Opportunities with Special Courses

You may join special courses to get a job in a special domain. After completing such courses, you will get a certificate to apply for jobs in particular domains. For example, some special courses are Data Scientist, Data analysis, CCNA, NET, CSIR, JAVA, .NET, PHP, Cloud Computing, SAP, Testing tools, UNIX/Linux administrator, etc.

After completing BE / B.Tech, you don’t need to do a job in engineering/technology. You can also become Cricketer, Politician, IAS, IPS, Businessman, TV reporter, Actor, and Lawyer, and many have chosen their interested field. They also have a degree in BE / B.Tech. So it is your choice to choose the interested one.
