1. Great Britain wins Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Cup 2017

  • Great Britain has won the ‘Sultan Azlan Shah Cup’ after a gap of 23 years with a rousing 4 -3 victory in the final against Australia (defending champions) at Ipoh in Malaysia.
  • Earlier, India outclassed New Zealand 4-0 to clinch a ‘bronze medal’ in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

Note:

  • The ‘Sultan Azlan Shah Cup’ is an annual international men's field hockey tournament held in Malaysia.
  • The tournament became an annual event after 1998, following its growth and popularity.
  • The tournament is named after the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia, Sultan Azlan Shah.

2. Olive Ridley to be mascot of Asian Athletics

  • The Chief Minister of Odisha ‘Naveen Patnaik’ has released the logo and mascot of the ‘Asian Athletics Championships’ in presence of Olympians PT Usha and Anju Bobby George.
  • More than 700 athletes from nearly 45 countries would participate in 42 sports events during the four-day sports extravaganza.
  • The state government would spend around 43 crore rupees for the organizing the grand sports event.

Note:

  • The Asian Athletics Championships will be held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar from 6th to 9th July this year.

3. Boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualifies for World Championships

  • Indian boxer ‘Kavinder Singh Bisht’ has qualified for the World Championships in the 52-kg category after getting a walkover against Salam Abdul Kasim (Malaysia) at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • Now,five Indian boxers Bist (52-Kg) Vikas Krishan (75-Kg) and Amit Phangal (49 Kg), Shiva Thapa (60-Kg) and Sumit Sangwan (91-Kg) have confirmed for the World Championships.

Note:

  • Top six boxers from each weight category in the Asian event will qualify for the World Championships in Germany scheduled for 25th August.

4. 8th May: World Red Cross Day

  • The ‘World Red Cross Day’ is observed on 8th May annually to commemorate the birth anniversary of 'Henry Dunant', the founder of the Red Cross as well as the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • In 1901, Henry Dunant has received the first Nobel Peace Prize together with Frédéric Passy.
  • The theme for 2017 is ‘Less Known Red Cross Stories’.

5. Every house to get smart ID in Haryana

  • The teams of Saksham and e-Numerator would visit houses to feed their GPS location in tablets and create smart house IDs online and link each house with biometric in Haryana.
  • During the survey, the address of each house, photo, location, details of the owner of house, electricity connection, water connection, details of electronic devices, bank account numbers, IFSC code, Aadhaar and personal details would be gathered.
  • The state government would make sure that benefits of 150 services of 87 departments are provided online through this data.

6. ONGC Videsh Ltd. produces record 12.6 million tons of crude oil in 2016-17

  • The overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC Videsh Limited) has produced a record 12.6 million tons of crude oil and equivalent gas from its assets abroad in 2016-17.
  • The output was up from 8.92 million tons of oil and oil equivalent gas in 2015-16.

7. Country's 1st bio refinery plant inaugurated in Pune

  • The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highway ‘Nitin Gadkari’ has inaugurated the country's first bio refinery plant which produces ethanol from the variety of biomass.
  • The project is situated at Rahu in Pune district.
  • The plant can produce one million liters of ethanol per annum by processing a variety of agro-residue like rice and wheat straw, cotton stalk, cane trash, corn cobs with superior product yields.

8. Emmanuel Macron elected as President of France

  • Pro- European centrist leader Emmanuel Macron (39-year) has won France's Presidential election.
  • He defeated his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen.
  • Macron has won the elections by securing 06% votes, while Le Pen got 33.94% of the votes.
  • He will become the first President from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republic's foundation in 1958.

  • The President of the French Republic is the executive head of state of the French Republic.
  • The powers, functions, and duties of prior presidential offices and their relations with the prime minister and cabinets has over time differed with the various French constitutions.

9. Cabinet appointments committee approves seven top-level changes in various banks

  • The cabinet appointments Committee has approved seven top-level changes in various public sector banks.
  • Usha Ananthasubramanian (MD, and CEO, Punjab National Bank) has been appointed as MD & CEO of ‘Allahabad Bank'.
  • Sunil Mehta, Executive (Director, Corporation Bank) has been appointed as MD & CEO of ‘Punjab National Bank’.
  • R Subramaniakumar (Executive Director, Indian Overseas Bank) has been elevated as MD & CEO of Indian Overseas Bank.
  • Dinabandhu Mohapatra (Executive Director at Canara Bank) as MD and CEO of Bank of India.
  • G Rajkiran Rai (Executive Director at Oriental Bank of Commerce) has been appointed MD & CEO of Union Bank of India, for a period of three years (from 1st July 2017).
  • A Sankara Narayanan (ED, Bank of India) has been appointed MD & CEO of Vijaya Bank (from 1st September)
  • MO Rego (MD & CEO of Bank of India) has been appointed MD & CEO of Syndicate Bank.

10. Indian scientists elected fellows of Royal Society

  • The three Indian-origin scientists Krishna Chatterjee (University of Cambridge), Yadvinder Malhi (University of Oxford) and Subhash Khot (New York University) have been elected fellows of the Royal Society.
  • Krishna Chatterjee’ has been recognized for his discoveries of genetic disorders of thyroid gland formation.
  • Yadvinder Malhi’ has been recognized for his works on understanding the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems and its response to the pressures of global change, including climate change, degradation, and loss of large animals.
  • Subhash Khot’ has been credited for throwing an insight into unresolved problems in the field of computational complexity.

Note:

  • Fellowship of the Royal Society is an award and fellowship granted by the Royal Society of London to individuals the society judges to have made a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science, and medical science.
