JEE Advanced 2017 Complete Paper Analysis, Difficulty Level, Question Paper and Answer Key

By Avinash Kumar|Updated : May 21st, 2017

JEE Advanced 2017 was conducted on 21 May 2017 by IIT Madras and was considered by most as easier than expected. When we compare the level with last year, it was indeed comparatively easier but that's a subjective opinion. Here, we present a detailed and quantified analysis of the exam.

JEE Advanced 2017 Pattern

JEE Advanced is considered to be one of trickiest, most competitive and at the same time most unpredictable of all entrance examinations. The pattern, maximum marks and type of questions are changed every year. Let's check the details of this year's paper:

  • There were 2 papers like last year: Paper 1 and Paper 2, conducted on the same day with a gap of 2 hours.
  • Each paper was divided into 3 parts subject-wise.
  • Each part had 3 sections having different types of questions
  • There was one new type introduced this year in which a candidate had to match 3 columns instead of 2.

Lets take a look at the distribution.

JEE Advanced 2017 Paper 1 pattern

SectionType of QuestionNumber of QuestionsMarking SchemeMaximum Marks
1Multiple Options Correct7+4 for all correct options marked, +1 for each correct marked, -2 if any wrong option is marked (even if the other option marked may be correct) 28
2Integer Type5+3 for correct answer, 0 for all other cases (no negative marking)15
3Single Option Correct Matching type6 (2 sets of 3Q each)+3 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect18

JEE Advanced 2017 Paper 2 pattern

SectionType of QuestionNumber of QuestionsMarking SchemeMaximum Marks
1Single Option Correct7+3 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect21
2Multiple Options Correct7+4 for all correct options marked, +1 for each correct marked, -2 if any wrong option is marked (even if the other option marked may be correct) 28
3Single Option Correct Matching type4 (2 sets of 2Q each)+3 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect12

JEE Advanced 2017 Class-wise distribution

JEE Advanced is not known to have a predictable distribution as well. In Paper 1, there was absolute uniformity in the distribution of questions and marks asked from class XI and XII in all the 3 subjects as given below:

Paper 1Class XIClass XII
Physics99
Chemistry99
Maths99
Total2727

But same can't be said for Paper 2 where weight-age was significantly higher for Class XII in Chemistry and Maths

Paper 2Class XIClass XII
Physics99
Chemistry315
Maths414
Total1638

Overall, a higher weightage was given to Class XII for Chemistry and Maths mainly due to topics of Organic & Inorganic Chemistry and Calculus.

JEE Advanced 2017 Difficulty Level

Paper 1 can be considered to be easy with more than 50% of the questions in the moderate category and then in the easy category. Let's take a look at the numbers for each:

Paper 1EasyMediumHard
Physics4122
Chemistry792
Maths5121
Total16335

Paper 2 was comparatively more tougher for all subjects. In both the papers, Physics was tougher with more questions based on application of mixed concepts or which requried higher order analytical skills along with a very thorough understanding of the concepts.

Paper 2EasyMediumHard
Physics567
Chemistry1062
Maths3123
Total182412

JEE Advanced 2017 Physics Section-wise Weight

In Paper 1, higher weightage was given to thermodynamics comparatively with a 3 questions of Matching type coming from the chapter. Mechanics took higher share section wise. Important topics covered were: Surface tension, common problems of laws of motion, induced EMF, LCR Circuit, Bohr's model, radioactivity. The second set of Matching type questions was on Force on moving charges in magnetic field and the circular motion.

Paper 1Number of Questions
Mechanics5
Heat and Thermodynamics4
Electrostatics and Magnetism3
Optics and Modern Physics4
Current Electricity and EMI2

In Paper 2, Mechanics had the highest weightage and no questions were asked from thermodynamics. The topics covered in this paper were: Error analysis, centre of mass, vectors, dual nature of matter and radiation, interference, rotational motion, escape velocity etc. A passage was asked on DC LC circuit and another on Rotational motion.

Paper 2Number of Question
Mechanics9
Heat and Thermodynamics0
Electrostatics and Magnetism3
Optics and Modern Physics2
Current Electricity and EMI4

You can check the overall marks distribution in various types of questions in both the papers below:

JEE Advanced 2017 Chemistry Section-wise Weight

In Chemistry, both the papers were almost uniformally distributed over all the 3 sections for number of questions as given below. In Paper 1, the topics covered were: work done in thermodynamic processes, lewis structures, P block elements, density of solids, reaction of alkenes, aromaticity, nomenclature and werner's theory. The 2 matching type sets were on Quantum model and Organic reactions of O containing compounds.

Paper 1Number of Questions
Physical7
Inorganic5
Organic6

In Paper 2, the topics covered were: Basicity and reactions of N containing organic compounds, reactions and properties of P and D block, colligative properties, collision theory, nucleophilic substitution, basics of surface chemistry, nerst equation and le-chatelier's principle (in a slightly different form). The 2 passages were based on chemical reactions of P block and Oxygen containing organic compounds.

Paper 2Number of Questions
Physical6
Inorganic6
Organic6

You can check the overall marks distribution in various types of questions of both the papers below:

JEE Advanced 2017 Mathematics Section-wise Weight

The distribution was pretty uniform in Mathematics as well in Paper 1 (except the fact that there were no direct questions from the chapters of trignometry. The topics covered were: Matrices, complex numbers, permutations, conditional probability, limits, continuity, applications of derivatives and a matching type set as well as multiple correct type questions on conic section.

Paper 1Number of Questions
Algebra6
Coordinate6
Calculus6
Trigonometry0

In Paper 2, higher weight-age went to calculus compared to others. The topics covered were: 3D and vectors in coordinate, matrices and probability in algebra, and almost the entire calculus in Paper 2. One of the passages came from vectors while the other was on roots of equations.

Paper 2Number of Questions
Algebra4
Coordinate4
Calculus9
Trigonometry1

Overall, compared to last year, it was on the easier side. The new type of question would not have caused a major concern if the concepts were correctly used. The stress, as expected was on analytical and application based questions rather than just memory based. We'll bring out the list of most important topics to cover for JEE advanced 2018 based on this analysis soon. So stay tuned.

All the best!!
