1. Lenin Moreno sworn in as Ecuador President

  • Lenin Moreno (64-year) has sworn in as Ecuador’s President following a tight electoral race in Presidential Elections 2017.
  • Engineer Jorge Glas will continue to serve as the Vice President of Ecuador.
  • Moreno (Ecuador's Socialist Party) won 51.16% of the votes and Guillermo Lasso (Conservative) fetched 48.8% of the ballots.
  • Moreno became the first disabled individual to take office as President of Ecuador.

2. Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' resigned as Nepal Prime Minister

  • Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' (Communist Party of Nepal) has resigned paving way for Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to become the next Prime Minister.
  • His resignation is an outcome of the power-sharing pact (in Aug 2016) signed between Prachanda and Nepali Congress President ‘Sher Bahadur Deuba’.
  • The pact was to run the Nepal Government on a rotational basis until elections to the parliament are held in February 2018.

3. First Robot police officer goes on duty in Dubai

  • Dubai Police have revealed their first robot officer, giving it the task of patrolling the city's malls and tourist attractions.
  • The robot (a customised Reem model from Pal Robotics) was unveiled at the Gulf Information and Security Expo and Conference.
  • The people will be able to use it to report crimes, pay fines and get information by tapping a touchscreen on its chest.
  • The robot can protect people from crime because it can broadcast what is happening right away to our command and control centre.
  • Now, it can communicate only in Arabic and English, but there are plans to add Russian, Chinese, French and Spanish to its repertoire.

4. Two Indian peacekeepers honoured posthumously with UN medal

  • Two Indian peacekeepers were among 117 military, police, and civilian personnel (from 43 nations) honoured by the United Nations (UN) with a prestigious UN medal awarded posthumously for courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
  • Brijesh Thapa (Rifleman), who served with the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Private
  • Ravi Kumar who was deployed with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon posthumously received the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

5. ITC and EDII bags Porter Prize 2017

  • ITC Ltd and EDII (Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India), Gujarat and have won the Porter Prize 2017 for their acumen in competitive strategies
  • ITC has won the award for Excellence in Corporate Governance and Integration and for its contribution in ‘Creating Shared Value’.
  • EDII is an autonomous body and not-for-profit institution is sponsored by apex financial institutions, namely the IDBI Bank Ltd, IFCI Ltd, ICICI Ltd, and State Bank of India (SBI).

6. BSNL launches satellite phone service using INMARSAT

  • The Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha has launched BSNL’s (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) satellite phone service through ‘INMARSAT’, initially offered to government agencies (like state police, railways, Border Security Force) and later opened for others citizen in phased manner.
  • The service will cover areas where no networks are present, provided by INMARSAT which has 14 satellites.
  • Satellite phones in India are presently provided by Tata Communications, which inherited the licence from Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) (now Tata Communications Ltd).

7. Mumbai, Kota named among world’s most densely populated cities

  • According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) citing UN Habitat data, two Indian cities (Mumbai and Kota) have been named among the world's most crowded in a list topped by Dhaka.
  • The population density of Dhaka (44,500 people per square kilometre) is the most crowded city on the planet.
  • India’s financial capital Mumbai (31,700 people per square kilometre) at the second place.
  • Kota (Rajasthan) with 12,100 people per square kilometre was ranked seventh.

8. Hyderabad local authorities proposes to build 100 fully automated & unmanned 'She Tiolets'

  • Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, Hyderabad Municipal authorities have proposed to build 100 fully automated and unmanned “She Toilets” at 100 places in the city.
  • The Authorities have built She Toilets at two public places on pilot basis which received appreciation from all quarters as the move fulfilled the requirements of women.
  • The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has now proposed to build 100 She toilets at 100 places by coming 15th

9. Cabinet approves allocation of 2.5% of Central Road Fund for development of National Waterways

  • The union Cabinet has approved allocation of 2.5% of Central Road Fund for development and maintenance of National Waterways by amending in the Central Road Fund Act, 2000 to boost inland water transport.
  • It will provide about Rs. 2000 crore per annum for the development and maintenance of National Waterways.
  • Around 1.8 lakh persons would be provided employment in the Inland Waterways Transport sector in the next five years.
  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India has estimated that about 25 thousand crore rupees will be required for development of identified projects till 2022-23.

10. P V Sindhu elected to Badminton World Federation Athletes’ Commission

  •  Rio Olympics silver medallist ‘P V Sindhu’ has become the second Indian (first- Saina Nehwal) to be inducted in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes' Commission.
  • Sindhu emerged the highest voted player (129 -votes) in the BWF Athletes' Commission election in Australia.
  • She will be joined by Marc Zweibler (Germany) and Kristy Gilmour (Scotland) for a four-year term.
  • The trio will be joined by Akvile Stapusaityte (Lithuania), who will be serving a two-year tenure after replacing Tan Yuanting(China), who retired after serving just two years on the panel.
