1. India successfully launches its communication satellite GSAT-19

  • India successfully launched its communication satellite GSAT-19 with heaviest Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III D-1 at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • It is most powerful ever rocket of the national space agency ISRO slung the satellite in a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO).
  • The satellite weighing 3136 kg during lift off and in about 16 minutes, the 43.43-metre tall rocket (nickname ‘fatty boy’), injected the satellite in space.
  • The GSLV-Mk III is the heaviest rocket ever made by India and capable of carrying the heaviest satellites made till date.
  • The satellite GSAT-19 has an intended lifespan of 10 years.It has an experimental payload called the geostationary radiation spectrometer(GRASP), to monitor and study the nature of charged particles in space and the influence of space radiation on satellites.

2. National Board of Wildlife clears Rutland Island for DRDO’s missile testing project

  • The Standing Committee of the National Board of Wildlife has approved Rutland Island (South Andaman) site for the country’s long-range missile test facility.
  • Since 2012, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been seeking the approval for the test facility.
  • The proposal involves diversion of 49.978 acres forest of which 0.84 ha falls in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and 49.138 ha reserve forest within 10km of the Eco Sensitive Zone.

Note:

  • National Board for Wild Life is a ‘Statutory Organization’ constituted under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • The board is ‘advisory’ in nature and advises the Central Government on framing policies and measures for conservation of wildlife in the country.

3. 6th June: Russian Language Day

  • The United Nations (UN) Russian Language Day is observed annually on 6th June to maintain the equality of all six official UN languages.
  • The day coincides with the birthday of Aleksandr Pushkin (Russian poet), who is considered the father of modern Russian literature.

4. Veteran parliamentarian Era Sezhiyan passes away

  • Veteran Parliamentarian and freedom fighter Era Sezhiyan (95-year) passed away at Vellore in Tamil Nadu due to a brief illness.
  • Sezhiyan was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962 on a DMK ticket from Perambalur constituency.
  • He was also a well-known writer in Tamil and has written numerous short stories and one-act plays.

5. India signs loan agreement with World Bank for Assam Citizen Centric Service Delivery project

  • India has signed a loan agreement of USD 39.2 million with the World Bank for the Assam Citizen Centric Service Delivery project.
  • Total project cost is USD 49 million, of which USD 39.2 million will be financed by the World Bank and the remainder will be funded out of the Assam state budget.
  • The loan will be provided by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).

6. PM Modi inaugurates 5th international conference of SPIC MACAY at IIT Delhi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 5th international conference of  'SPIC MACAY' at IIT Delhi.
  • The conference coincides with the 40th year of inception of SPIC MACAY.
  • SPIC MACAY organizes an International Convention every year to expose the youth from across the world to the rich and multi-hued culture of India.

Note:

  • SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth) is a non-political, nationwide, a voluntary movement founded in 1977 by Dr. Kiran Set at IIT Delhi.
  • It is a movement with chapters in over 300 towns all over the world.

7. EESL to replace 10 lakh street lights in Andhra Pradesh

  • The union govt. will retrofit 10 lakh conventional street lights with LED lights in Gram Panchayats of 7 districts (Guntur, Prakasham, Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa, Ananthapur, and Chittoor) in Andhra Pradesh, under center's Street Lighting National Project.
  • It will help the gram panchayats to save annually approximately 147 million units of electricity.
  • The cost of this project is being funded by French Development Agency.
  • Energy Efficiency Sevices Limited (EESL) would be carrying out the entire annual maintenance and warranty replacement in these gram panchayats for a period of 10 years.

8. Rajnath Singh inaugurates conference on disaster management

  • Today, the Union Home Minister ‘Rajnath Singh’ has inaugurated the two-day national level conference on “Capacity Building of SDRF-2017” in New Delhi.
  • The conference is being organized by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to develop a synergy and to highlight way ahead to strengthen the response capabilities of State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF).
  • The Standard Operating Procedure on Disaster Management for Differently Abled Persons has also been released.

9. TRAI launches three mobile Apps

  • Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched three mobile Apps (Mycall App, Myspeed App and Do Not Disturb), an upgraded official website and a portal in New Delhi.
  • The three Apps have been launched with a view to help mobile phone users rate their experience about voice call quality in real time.
  • Now, TRAI gathers customer experience data along with network data and enable smartphone users to register their mobile numbers under DND to avoid Unsolicited Commercial Communication, SMSs, and telemarketing calls.

  • Telecom Regulatory Authority of India was established on 20 February 1997 by an Act of Parliament to regulate telecom services and tariffs in India.
  • TRAI's mission is to create and nurture conditions for growth of telecommunications in India to enable the country to have a leading role in the emerging global information society.

10. Ramkumar Ramanathan lifts ITF men's Futures tennis title

  • India's Ramkumar Ramanathan lifted the USD 15000 ITF men's Futures tennis title after outplaying Raymond Sarmiento (USA) in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in Singapore.
  • It was the first title of the season for Ramkumar.
