JEE Main 2019/2020 may change it's name or frequency, but one thing that has remained consistent from AIEEE to the current JEE Main to any upcoming version is the syllabus, the level of questions and the weightage of chapters and topics maybe because the exam has always been conducted by CBSE. Keeping this in mind, we analysed the question papers of previous 5 years to get a weightage, backed by data. In this article,we share the weightage of units and chapters of Maths, along with the most important topics to cover.
JEE Main Maths: Unit-wise Weight
We have divided all the chapters of Maths into 4 Units for better understanding as given below:
- Algebra
- Coordinate Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Calculus
Let's check out the weightage of these units based on the analysis of Question papers of Previous 5 Years (JEE Main 2013 to 2017)
One of the key features of the Maths paper is its consistency. The pattern, the type of questions and the weightage of topics has remained the same over these years. The 2 high weightage units are Algebra and Calculus. Not to mention the fact that atleast 2 out of 30 questions are based on the concepts of more than 1 unit.
Let's check the Chapter-wise weight in each of the units.
JEE Main Maths: Chapter-wise weight in Algebra
Most of the chapters of class XI (and 1 chapter from 12th) make up this unit. The values given in the chart are the weightage of these chapters out of the entire maths syllabus.
The most important topics are:
- Algebra of Complex Numbers
- Modulus and Conjugate of Complex numbers and their properties
- Roots of Unity
- Quadratic equations and location of their Roots
- Matrices: Types and Operations
- Adjoint and Inverse of a Matrix
- Properties of Determinants
- Area of Triangles
- Permutations & Combinations
- Algebra of Events and Probability
- Conditional Probability
- Multiplication Theorem of Probability
- Bayes' Theorem
- AP, GP & their means
- Relationship between AM and GM
- Binomial Theorem: general and middle terms
- Calculation of Mean Deviation, variance & standard deviation
- Validity of a statement
JEE Main Maths: Chapter-wise weight in Coordinate Geometry
Considering that we get only formula based fixed number of questions from this is perhaps the easiest. However, not to be taken lightly, a lot of practice is required to avoid silly or calculation mistakes in these questions and to improve your speed and comfort. Let's check the chapter-wise weight of this unit:
The most important topics in this unit are:
- Slope of Lines and Angles between them
- Distance of a Point From a Line and Distance between 2 parallel lines
- Centroid, Incentre, Orthocnetre and Circumcentre of a triangle
- Equations of Tangents, Normal and Chords of Circles
- Ellipse
- Parabola
- Hyperbola
- Direction cosines and Equation of Lines in Space
- Angle and distance between 2 lines
- Equation of Planes
- Angle between two planes
- Coplanarity of 2 lines
- Operations of vectors
JEE Main Maths: Chapter-wise Weight in Trigonometry
This is the smallest unit and if we go by the weightage, it has the least. However, considering the fact that trigonometric ratios and concepts can be used in algebra (complex numbers & matrices) and in Calculus (as a function directly or as a method to simplify other functions for easier integration), this is a very important unit and needs to be completed first to have an ease way in other units. The chapter-wise weight of Trigonometry is given below:
CHAPTER | WEIGHT (out of 120 Marks) |
Trigonometric Identities | 5.67 |
Solutions of Triangles & Heights and Distances | 1.33 |
The most important topics here are:
- Trigonometric Functions: Domain, range and graph
- Trigonometric Identities and formula
- Trigonometric Equations and inequations
- Inverse trigonometric Functions: Domain range and Graph
- Heights and Distances
JEE Main Maths: Chapter-wise Weight in Calculus
The second most heavy unit of Maths, this is the most important unit because it has applications not just in Maths but in Physics & Chemistry as well. Also, whichever engineering you end up choosing, if it has a maths component, it will have calculus. So an absolute clarity is required in this unit. Also, a lot of practice to cover the many many different varieties of questions which can be asked from this (which is what makes it comparatively difficult). Let's check the chapter-wise weight of this unit.
The most important topics are:
- Invertible Functions and Binary Operations
- Various functions and their graphs
- Logarithmic and Exponential functions
- Algebra of Limits
- Derivatives of different types of functions and their Algebra
- Continuity of a function
- Higher order derivatives
- Rolle's and Mean Value Theorem
- Rate of change of quantities
- Increasing and Decreasing Functions, Maxima and Minima, Maximum and Minimum values of a function in closed Interval
- Tangents and Normal
- Indefinite & definite integration of various forms
- Definite Integral as limit of a sum
- Area under Curves
- General and Particular solutions of Differential Equations
- Formation of Differential Equations from given solutions
JEE Main Maths: Chapter-wise weight
For all those who do not like graphs, here is a complete weightage of all the chapters of Maths for reference (for calculation of weightage, some of the chapters which are appearing twice or have similar concepts, have been combined):
CHAPTER NO. | CHAPTER | WEIGHT (out of 120 Marks) |
Class XI | ||
1 | Sets, Relations and Functions | 3.33 |
2 | Trigonometric Identities | 5.67 |
3 | Solutions of Triangles & Heights and Distances | 1.33 |
4 | Complex Numbers & Quadratic Equations | 7.00 |
5 | Permutations & Combinations | 3.00 |
6 | Progressions & Series and Binomial Theorem | 9.67 |
7 | Straight Lines | 5.00 |
8 | Circles | 5.00 |
9 | Conic Section | 6.67 |
10 | Limits and Differentiation | 6.67 |
11 | Mathematical Reasoning and Induction | 3.33 |
12 | Statistics | 3.33 |
13 | Probability | 3.33 |
Class XII | ||
14 | Matrices & Determinants | 6.67 |
15 | Applications of Differentiation | 6.33 |
16 | Integration | 7.00 |
17 | Applications of Integrals | 3.33 |
18 | Differential Equations | 3.33 |
19 | 3D Geometry | 6.67 |
20 | Vectors | 3.33 |
Now, just to prove that this analysis is very close to the actual paper pattern, check out the this table where we compare the weightage of Chapters before JEE Main 2017 and the weight of chapters in JEE Main 2017 and find out for yourself:
UNIT | JEE Main 2017 | Pre 2017 Analysis |
Algebra | 33.33 | 35.00 |
Calculus | 36.67 | 32.67 |
Coordinate Geometry | 23.33 | 25.33 |
Trigonometry | 6.67 | 7.00 |
The slight variation in Algebra & Calculus can be attributed to questions based on multiple concepts.
