In last 2 weeks I have appeared in few interviews for M.Tech / MS admissions. I want to share my experience with you guys, so I will be writing 2-3 posts giving details of all the interviews. You may ask any doubt in comments.

I have applied in IISc Banglore, in department of Signal Processing, Communication & Networks (C&N), Microelectronics and in Department of Electrical System Engineering (DESE). Out of these, C&N and DESE take interviews. DESE also take a written test.

Here are some details of DESE written test as I remember:
Date: 14 May 2018, IISc Banglore
Exam timings 8:00 - 9:30 (AM)
26 Questions asked (non MCQ) like:
1. If 2 cards are drawn at random from a deck of 52 cards, then what is the probability that both are kings.
2. Asked to draw state diagram of a digital system.
3. Some Op-amp questions.
4. Some Microprocessor questions. (One about Interrupts and one about usage of instruction "DAA" in a program)
5. CMOS questions. A CMOS circuit was given and we were asked about its functioning.
6. We were asked to draw a circuit of EXNOR gate using minimum number of NOR gates.
7. Asked to draw circuit of 5×1 MUX from 2×1 MUX
8. There were some Memory based questions like Band Gap of Si, writing some materials in increasing order of conductivity, number of interrupts in microprocessors etc.

10. One question was on digital filter ( That, I do not remember exactly)
11. Ripple voltage %age in 3 phase full wave rectifier with resistive load.
12. In a question, P⁻AP Matrix was given. We were asked to find characteristic equation of A.
13. A signal, uniformly varying between -10V to 10V, is quantized. How many bits are required such that SNR is 30 dB.
14. Asked to design a "+1" increment circuit, which take a 3 bit input and output 4 bit number.
There were some more questions I can't recall. Result of written test was declared on same day and the interview was scheduled after 2 days (16th May)

These questions were asked in the interview...
Interview duration : Nearly 20 minutes
0. What interests me in DESE and why its priority is number 4 ? 😂
1. Draw V-I characteristics of diode.
2. Write its V-I relation. Asked about functioning in reverse region. What is Vₜ and how it varies with temperature.
3. Diode switching characteristics.
4. Reverse recovery time. Its detailed explanation. What is its relation with minority lifetime.
5. Mathematics questions : find roots of these equations
x +1 = 0
x² + 1 = 0
x³ + 1 = 0
xⁿ + 1 = 0
I found out roots of all these by one method but they want particularly some other explanation (i.e. by writing
x = exp[ι(2k+1)π/n])
So they gave me some hints to reach this particular solution.
Interviewers were calm and supportive, and were giving enough chances and hints to answer the questions.
