Beyond School: Science Facts Series Part I: We have started this series on 29 June 2019 and expect the questions from your sides. Some students enthusiastically ask their queries and we will mention their queries and name in the second part of this series. In this series, we are giving the reason of previous mind crawing queries.

1. Why is Ocean Blue?

The Sunlight (White colour) is the combination of all colours. When the sunlight hits the ocean, the water strongly absorbs long-wavelength colors at the red end of the light spectrum, as well as short-wavelength light, including violet and ultraviolet. The remaining light that we see is mostly made up of blue wavelengths. Since blue light is absorbed least, therefore, the ocean appears blue.

2. Why Red colour is used as a danger signal?

In the electromagnetic spectrum, every colour has a different wavelength. The red colour has the highest wavelength in the visible region. When the light passes through the atmosphere, it gets scattered by small air particles. The scattering of light is inversely proportional to the fourth power of its wavelength. As the red light has the highest wavelength among all the colours, so it is scattered the least. Due to which most of the light gets reflected back and can travel longer distances through rain, fog, dust etc. to reach our eyes effectively.

3. Why are drops spherical?

Drops are spherical due to the surface tension. Surface tension is the property of liquid by which surface molecule of the liquid try to hold the liquid together and acquiring minimum surface area.  As we know that the minimum acquiring area by anything is spherical thats why drops are spherical.

4. How do fish drink water?

Fish are lives in two types of water: Freshwater and salty water. Freshwater fish do not actively drink water but absorb the water through osmosis (osmosis means that the water passes through the cells of the fish's skin into its body). On the other hand, saltwater fish do actively drink sea water. Their gills process the water and take out the salt.

5. Why do wet clothes feel cold?

The water molecules in the wet clothes absorb more heat from our body to evaporate causing a cooling effect. Therefore more of latent heat of vapourisation takes place by the water molecules in the wet clothes making us feel colder. The water molecules in the wet clothes absorb more heat from our body to evaporate causing a cooling effect.

6. Why do women have shriller Voices than men?

The shrillness of a sound depends upon its frequency and pitch, the higher the pitch the shriller the sound. The sound is produced by the vocal chord, the length of the vocal chord in men is naturally higher than women. As the vocal chord of the men are comparatively longer they vibrate less per second thus producing sound having a low frequency. As the vocal chord of the women are comparatively smaller they vibrate more per second thus producing sound having a high frequency. Therefore women have shriller voices than men.

7. Why do we have two eyes instead of one?

8. Why does onion make you cry?

When we cut the onion it produces the chemical irritant syn-propanethial-S-oxide. It is a volatile chemical and evaporate at normal temperature and forming gas. When this gas enters in our eyes, it reacts with the substance that keeps our eyes lubricated and forms mild sulfuric acid. This acid gives us the burning sensation in our eye. In order to wash off this acid our lacrimal gland producing disinfecting liquid (tears).

9. Why do we have seasons?

10. Why is glass transparent?
