Every year on 5th of June we celebrate “World Environment Day”. But this year was something different not because India celebrated last year and China celebrating this year. It was celebrated with critical theme “Beat air Pollution”. As we all know pollution on Earth is growing day by day and Air pollution is the worst of it. We cannot stop breathing but we can do something about the quality of air we breathe.

In India context, of the 20 most polluted cities in the world 14 are from India. There are several sources which contaminate air such as vehicular emission, combustion from plants and industries, garbage burning , road dust due to construction sites, agricultural activities.

Air pollution has deadly affected human health, a recent survey by Centre for Science And environment concluded that life expectancy in India has gone down by 2.6 years. It has also impacted our economy also around USD 30 billion annually is spent to minimize the effect of air pollution. Our environment has also been affected by it acid rains are one such example of this menace.

Nation Clean air programme, launch of national air quality index, measures to curb vehicular pollution by adopting green mobility are some steps taken by Indian Government. It is hoped that we all stand up to this cause and do something for environment. We cannot transform our planet into a planet where safe air for breathing isn’t possible.
