Stunting is the impaired growth and development that the children experience from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and adequate psychosocial stimulation. Despite stunting in children in India reduced at rate of 1% per year in last decade .But as per recent survey by Food and Nutrition Security(FNS) of India developed by United Nation World Food programme in partnership with Ministry of Statics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) stated that 31.4% Of Indian children under five year will be stunted by 2022.
Despite India becoming self sufficient in food grain production with large increase in the production of rice, wheat, and other cereals , the per capita availability of these grains has not increases at the same level due to inequality, population growth, food wastage and losses and exports. Stunting can have Serious consequences and can lead to long lasting harmful affect such as diminishing mental ability and learning capacity and poor performance at school. This results in poor earning in adulthood. It also leads to diseases like Diarrhoea, which is the one of the leading cause of death in children. Nutritional status of mother before and after pregnancy and chronic hunger is one the primary determinant of stunting in children. Environmental factors such as availability of clean water and poor sanitation also leads to same.
India has identified sanitation as one of the its important priorities in recent years .With launch of sawchh bharat abhiyan is good step. And steps taken by central and state governments like Poshan abhiyan , Purna Abhiyan are some goods steps .It is hoped that our government will do something to undermine the survey which showed grey line for India.
