JEE Main 2020: How to score 99 percentile in Physics

By Gagan Makkar|Updated : September 26th, 2019

Hello Gradians,

Physics, the subject feared by some and loved by some. Scoring a good score( above 200) directly depends on how you perform in Physics section. Journey of scoring average to above average is mostly made successful by getting a good hold on this section. The question is, how can we make it possible?

First and foremost caution that this subject comes with is " I am not superficial ". Going through the chapters hastily and mugging formulas won't make you score good in this section. It requires conceptual clarity, devoting time with patience along with the right guidance is extremely crucial. In this article, we will be mentioning some tips or hacks for scoring 99 percentile in Physics.

Right approach or stratregy to follow:-

  • Students miss to understand the importance of NCERT textbooks. It's best for concept building. Go through every chapter and every problem atleast once.
  • After completing NCERT, you can pick any one standard book, like H.C Verma or DC Pandey. Solve any of the books completely. Analyze every solved example, it will increase your understanding of concepts and give you an idea of approaching the problems.
  • Make thorough notes of every chapter. This is something, that students fail to do appropriately. Always jot down the important concepts or tricks that you find while attempting quizzes or mocks. Make charts of all the important tricks.
  • Practice mocks and previous year papers in last month before exam along with proper revision schedule. It makes one familiar with the exam level and exam environment which is extremely essential for getting exam ready.
  • Lastly, work on improving the skill of problem solving.

Last year's Physics section was of moderate level.  The overall paper was well balanced which checked the knowledge and problem-solving capability of the students.

The question paper was distributed over the entire JEE Main Physics syllabus barring few topics. Out of 30 questions, 14 questions were easy, 9 questions were medium and 7 questions were hard.

Some important tips

  • Never keep any doubts in mind, ask even the smallest of doubt you have and clear it.
  • Analyze the pattern from previous year papers, note down all the chapters and topics that are frequently asked in exam. Allocate time in your study plan accordingly. Topics such as Mechanics, electrodynamics, optics, modern physics and thermodynamics are of higher weightage. Focusing on these topics should be higher on priority as it will be helpful in fetching a good score.
  • Also, don't miss out on easy chapters that are easy to score in, like semiconductors , error analysis and Gravitation.
  • Work on your patience and temperament during your preparation days. Make sure, you don't waste excess time in any question. Time management is extremely crucial during the exam. Try finishing Chemistry section as soon as possible without compromising with accuracy. Saved time can be utilized in other two sections.
  • Don't be rigid while approaching a problem. Some questions might be there that won't get solved in first attempt. Mark them and move forward or immediately look for the new approach.
  • Also, some questions can be solved using option elimination method or by using dimensional analysis. Read every question carefully before you start attempting it. It can save your time during the exam.
  • Checking progress and self-analysing at regular intervals is very crucial. Work on weak points simultaneously.

Stay positive and motivated during the preparation journey.
