1. KS Dhatwalia appointed as the new chief of PIB

  • Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Press Information Bureau (PIB). He becomes the 28th DG of the PIB.
  • He succeed incumbent Sitanshu Ranjan Kar.

Note:

  • On 30th September Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia, an Indian Information Service (IIS) officer appointed the principal spokesperson of the government.
  • Dhatwalia, a 1984-batch IIS officer, has been posted as the new principal director general of the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the publicity wing of the central government.
  • He succeeded Sitanshu Kar, will function as the principal spokesperson of the government of India.

Note:

  • The Press Information Bureau (PIB) is the nodal agency of the Government of India to broadcast information to the print and electronic media on government policies, programmes, initiatives and achievements.

2. S&P lowered India's growth forecast to 6.3% for 2019-20

  • The S&P Global Ratings lowered India’s growth projection for 2019-20 to 6.3% from 7.1%.

Note:

  • In September the Asian Development Bank (ADB) also lowered India's growth forecast from 7.2 per cent to 6.5 per cent for the current fiscal.

3. International Day of Older Persons observed on 1st October

  • Every year on 1st October the International Day of Older Persons observed around the world.
  • The theme for 2019 is "The Journey to Age Equality".
  • The 2019 theme is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10) and focuses on pathways of coping with existing — and preventing future — old age inequalities.
  • The day highlights the important contributions that older people make to society and raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges of ageing in today’s world.

4. Air Marshal HS Arora takes over as Vice-Chief of Air Force

  • On 1st October Air Marshal, Harjit Singh Arora took over as Vice-Chief of the Indian Air Force.
  • He succeeds Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria who took over as the IAF Chief on September 30.
  • He was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in Dec 1981.
  • He has rich and diverse experience of over 2600 hours accident-free operational flying which includes MiG 21, MiG 29 and other aircraft in IAF inventory, including helicopters.
  • He was deputed as Defence Attache at the Embassy of India, Bangkok, Thailand from 2006 to 2009.

5. Annu Rani becomes 1st Indian to qualify for women's javelin throw final

  • India's top female javelin thrower player Annu Rani made it to the finals of the World Athletics Championship.
  • She is the first Indian woman to reach the finals of this event.
  • Annu threw the javelin 62.43 meters away in the qualification round, which not only earned him a place in the final but also improved his national record.
  • She was ranked 5th among all participants in qualification.
