Demokratia = Demos (people) + Kratos (power) = “The people hold power”

A political system that allows citizens to participate in political decision-making or in electing representatives to the government bodies is a democracy. This right is majorly asserted via vote and then the election of their government. Democracy gives political parties a level playing field for the contestation of power.

The UN strives to achieve its goal not only concerning peace and nation-building but also that of Human Rights and development. It is a firm believer of the fact that HR and the rule of law is best protected and upheld in a democratic society.

The UN’s International Day of Democracy is annually held on September 15 to raise awareness about democracy. Across the globe, various activities are held to promote democracy on this date.

The day was founded on the 20th anniversary of the First International Conference of New or Restored Democracies, which gave people a chance to promote and consolidate democracy worldwide.

The theme of this year’s International Day of Democracy was Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World. Hence, it was an opportunity to explore ways to replenish democracy and address its challenges. The challenges include tackling problems of inequality, marginalization and making democracy all-inclusive and innovative to tackle challenges.

Indian democracy

Indian civilization is one of the oldest in the world.

Similarly, democracy as an ideal and a concept isn’t foreign and has an Indian origin. A look at Indian history will help us get to the fact that democratic republics existed in India long before independence too. Vaishali has been acknowledged as one of the world’s oldest democracies by some renowned historians.

However, the cult of monarchy soon engulfed the country, and it was not until the mid-19th century, under the growing influence of colonialism and the uprising against British rule that the democratic ideals saw an upsurge.

The makers of the Indian constitution further emboldened the democratic spirit by enshrining the concept of Universal Adult Franchise.  It has been incorporated in the constitution under Article 326 of its Constitution and has been active since 1950.

The country’s democracy has stood the test of time with baggage like partition, war with China and the Kashmir issue topping the charts. The case of India is exceptional for its liberal and democratic institutions.  The other British colonies either did not emerge as a democratic state or quickly succumbed to the temptations of an authoritarian rule.

Why is democracy important?

The world as a whole is multi-cultural. To channelise the opinions and voices of all its members, democracy looks like the only feasible option. Efforts from multilateral institutions like the UN is needed as it would make the whole process a more inclusive one. Democracy aims to achieve the highest good of the most significant number. It guarantees the liberty of an individual against the irrational state power. It promotes merit against the privileges of birth or riches.
