The examination of JEE Advanced is a Computer-based Test (CBT), which comprises of 2 papers, paper 1 and paper 2. JEE Advanced exam tests the analytical skills and conceptual application of students. The competition is surely not easy and to get through JEE Advanced 2020, you need to work hard with full dedication and proper strategy. In this article we will be talking about some preparation tips that you should follow and certain mistakes that you should avoid doing while preparing for JEE Advanced exam.

Preparation Tips

  • Analyse the syllabus and make a detailed timetable: Before starting with your preparation, you must go through the syllabus of JEE Advanced and make a timetable allotting specific time to each topic. Try to complete the topic within the given deadline.
  • Improve your speed: The key to cracking the examination is accuracy and at the same time maintaining speed. Use short cuts and tricks of Vedic maths to improve your calculation speed. Your speed and accuracy are directly proportional to the number of questions you practice.
  • Work on your analytical skills: If you can find out different methods of solving the same problem, your analytical skills improve. Solve puzzles and riddles to keep your brain sharp. If you are swift in understanding questions and determining the way the questions need to be solved, you will get an edge over others, on the day of the examination.
  • Practice previous years’ questions: Practicing solved problems of previous years will not only acquaint you with the question pattern, but you can also get an idea about the most frequently asked topics and thus make a strategy accordingly.
  • Focus more on important topics as well as scoring topics- You need to understand the exam pattern first for clearing the exam. There are certain topics that are scoring and asked frequently in exam. Topics like these should be high on your priority list while revision.
  • Make charts and short notes of important formulas and concepts for last minute revision- Making charts and short notes is important for quick revision before the exam and memorizing/revising important concepts and formulas. Go through them at least once in a day.
  • Attempt mocks regularly and make an error sheet- Attempting full length mocks and practicing regularly is very crucial in end days. Not just practicing, it's equally important to rectify errors, for that we will suggest to make an error register. It will help you in eliminating the errors/mistakes you are making and strengthening weak points.
  • Attempt mock tests in the same time slot in which you will be sitting for exam on D-day- Preparing your brain for the D-day is very important, try giving the mocks in the same time slot in which you will be giving the exam on D-day. It will make your brain habitual to work efficiently in that time slot.
  • Work on the temperament and time management- It's rightly said, getting selected depends on how you handle the exam pressure. Some students do not focus much on this aspect and end up screwing badly on the D-day. Preparing yourself for the D-day is very crucial, solving problems with speed and accuracy along with appropriate time allocation to each section comes with practice. So, make sure you attempt enough full length mocks strictly based on JEE Main 2020 latest pattern.

Things to Avoid while Preparing for JEE Advanced

  • Social media: One of the things which students need to avoid is spending too much time on social media. If they do not control their urge to be active on social media platforms, they will soon feel distracted, and they will not be able to focus on their studies for long.
  • Referring to too many books: One important thing which you need to refrain from is, reading too many books at a time. You can use reference books but make sure that those books are only the standard ones. If you rely on too many books, you may feel confused.
  • Getting depressed due to low scores: If you get low scores in some of the mock tests, you should not get depressed. Rather, you should use this as motivation and work hard towards improving your performance to get a decent score in the next tests.
  • Delaying revising the topics learned on the same day: A mistake that seems small but plays a significant role overall. The best you remember any concept is on the same day it is taught/learned, revising or going through it on the same day will enhance your understanding of topics even more.
  • Becoming irregular and lack of continuity: Clearing an exam like JEE Advanced requires constant efforts, even a day matters. Make sure you are regular with the studies and not deviate from your goal till last day.
  • Not following the right books and reading too many books: This is important to understand, you don't have to practice each book available in the market to get selected. Focus on selective books and do them again and again. You will keep on improving your subject knowledge.
  • Believing in myths and everything you hear from different sources: Study atleast 10 hours a day or don't study late in the night or having a fear for Physics because everyone says, it's difficult. Don't give heed to such rumors, everyone has a different strategy and you should find your own strategy. Study smartly and efficiently, that's all matters, not the number of hours or anything else.
  • Keeping doubts in mind and not keeping track of errors: Analyze your progress regularly, keep track on the errors you are making. Note the weaker areas and work constantly towards improving it.
  • Procrastination: Get rid of this habit, never delay the work in hand.
  • Bad circle of friends: Stay around positive people, keep distance from all those who make you doubt yourself.
