Off-the-Job Training Methods

Vestibule training method: In this method, the training is given to the employees in the simulated environment of the actual environment.

  • This type of training is given to the employees who are involved in skill-based work (manufacturing units).
  • If the training is given in the actual manufacturing units, there may be a chance for the damage of valuable machinery. This method is very much useful for such organizations that involve multi-layered manufacturing processes.
  • In this method, the actual working conditions of the work are created with all the equipment, machinery, etc. in a classroom.
  • This method is very expensive.

Programmed instructions method: In this method, the entire training module is divided into certain chapters, and the assessment is done at the end of every chapter.

  • The assessment is done in the form of question and answer type or multiple-choice type questions.
  • The next modules of training are imparted to an employee when they complete the current module successfully.
  • This method is very expensive and time-consuming. 

Lecture method: It is a direct and traditional method of classroom training. In this method, the entire training module is delivered in the form of a lecture by the trainer.

  • The lecture delivered by the trainer explains the nature of the work and all the other technical aspects related to the job.
  • The lecture motivates the employees to accomplish the task.
  • In this method, the training can be imparted to a large group of employees.

Case study method: This method of training was developed by Harvard Business School. In this method, an issue or a problem that is being faced by the organization is given to the employees in the form of writing and are asked to analyze and provide an effective solution to the problem.

  • This method will help the employees to think creatively by taking the resources of the organization into consideration.
  • This method will enhance teamwork and help the employees in improving their communication skills.

Roleplay method: In this method, an imaginary situation is created, and the employees are made to play the role of a supervisor or an engineer, etc. in that situation.

  • This method will help the employees to improve their interpersonal skills.
  • The employees will come to know about the various roles and their span of control within the organization.
  • The employees will come to know about the various resources available and their utilization methods to accomplish the task effectively.

Incident training method: This method of training was developed by Paul Pigors. In this method, the organization prepares a set of incidents that have happened in their organization or other organizations.

  • In this method, the employees are asked to make short term and long term decisions.
  • Later, the employees are divided into different groups and are asked to make short term and long term decisions again.
  • This will enable the employees to make practical judgments and develop teamwork.

Conferences / Discussions: In this method, a topic is given to the already existing employees and are asked to express their views on the given topic.

  • This will help the organization in generating new ideas to improve the job outcomes.
  • The employees will get a chance to express their views.

In basket training: In this method, a set of papers that include various problems of his functional area are prepared and are put in a basket.

  • The trainee employees are asked to pick a paper and analyze the problems written on it.
  • The recommendations of all the employees are noted, and the best alternatives are taken into consideration.
  • This will help the employees to develop critical thinking.
  • This method of training is very economical and easily assessed.

Evaluation of training and developmental activities

  • Evaluation of training activities is done in order to control the gaps between the training modules and the actual skills that are required to accomplish the task effectively.
  • To know the effectiveness of the training and the value added to the employees and to the organization.
  • The evaluation is also done to measure the benefits of various training programs in the monetary terms. This can be done in the following ways:
    • By calculating the return on investment (ROI).
    • By utility analysis.
  • Calculation of ROI: It is the process of evaluation of training costs which involve the following activities:
    • Cost-benefit analysis: It takes all the non-monetary benefits into consideration which includes improvements in the performance levels and attitudes of the employees, dedication towards the work, etc.
    • Cost-effective analysis: It takes all the monetary benefits into consideration which involves improvement in the profits, the time taken by the employees to complete the work, improvement in the quality of work, etc.
  • Utility analysis: Utility analysis is done to determine the areas where there is a significant amount of improvement after the training is conducted. This will help the organization to design the training modules more effectively.
