GATE 2020 Topper's Interview Avinash Verma (AIR 9 ME)

GATE is the biggest exam for every Mechanical Engineer who is aiming to secure a job in govt. PSU such as IOCL, ONGC, NTPC Exam or pursue higher studies in the most prestigious institutes i.e. IISc, IIT's, NIT etc. Every year over 1.5 lac candidates appear for the GATE exam and strive to fulfil their dreams. This year GATE 2020 was conducted on 1st Feb in two slots (forenoon & afternoon) and the final result was declared on 13th March in which Avinash Verma achieved AIR 9 with 83.39 marks and 945 GATE score in GATE 2020 Mechanical Engineering exam.

Gradeup: Please tell us something about yourself and your motivation to appear for GATE 2020

Avinash: I am from Jharkhand and this was my 3rd attempt at GATE exam.

Gradeup: Please share your preparation strategy in detail

Avinash: I did self-study by using different sources of study including BYJU'S Exam Prep app. I mainly focused on revising short notes, mistakes copy, test series.

Gradeup: Please share some important topics & necessary preparation sources (books/study material etc) to prepare for GATE

AvinashAll topics are important for GATE. Apart from referring to any coaching material, it is important to prepare short notes and keep revising it as many times as possible.

Gradeup: What are the challenges you faced in your preparation journey?

Avinash
  • Financial constraints, no hobby, compromised with health.
  • Suffered from acute depression after repeated failures in spite of working very hard, only to see the success I got that has given me the opportunity to write this.

Gradeup: What are some mistakes that you would have done during your preparation, that you would advise fellow aspirants to avoid?

Avinash
  • Do not leave any topic/subject untouched because you never know how hard can life smash you in crucial times.
  • Also, always remember that Gate checks more of your "APTITUDE" than "in-depth technical knowledge (which is obviously a prerequisite)".

Gradeup: What was your strategy in the last 1 month before the GATE exam?

Avinash
  • Revise short notes, mistakes copy.
  • Write a few tests.
  • If possible, try to go back to the previous year questions which were difficult to solve in the first go.
  • If you have anxiety issues, go for a "few" CBT's.
  • Lastly, try to remain chillax.

Gradeup: How did BYJU'S Exam Prep help you in your preparation?

Avinash:
  • I had given a few Full-length tests in this app, in which the questions were of GATE level.
  • Apart from this, I used to solve many doubts posted by others in the doubt section of the app.
