By Kajal Vats|Updated : April 7th, 2020

GATE 2020 IN was conducted on 1st Feb with 7,322 aspirants. Determination is a key to sucess and when we set a goal, work hard for it with consistency to achieve it nothing can stop us. Rahul Dey is one such GATE aspirant who achieved AIR 96 With 64.67 marks and 724 score in GATE 2020 IN Exam. Rahul is a M.Tech from IIT Hyderabad in Electrical Engineering who had his goals at the right place from the beginning.

Rahul's aim was to secure rank under 100 so that he can teach many students and guide them to right path. So here Rahul shared his experience with BYJU'S Exam Prep, expaining his whole preparation journey in detail which will help many GATE aspirants to crack the exam.

Gradeup: Please tell us something about yourself and your motivation to appear for GATE 2020

Rahul:

  • I have done my M.Tech from IIT Hyderabad in Electrical Engg. (Systems and Control).
  • My biggest motivation for GATE 2020 was to secure under 100 rank, so that I am able to teach as well as guide Engineering students in the current difficult scenario.

Gradeup: Please share your preparation strategy in detail

Rahul:

  • To be honest I didn't had a strategy, all I did was follow a daily routine. Consistency is the key factor. On an average I devoted 6 hours daily to studies.
  • Managed to make short notes for revision from books and video lectures available from different sources
  • Made a separate notebook for questions that I was unable to solve in test series or collected from different forums such as BYJU'S Exam Prep and Facebook groups.
  • Marked out my mistakes and kept a note of them too, like to take note of the units asked in questions or the axes of graphs etc. We learn from our mistakes.
  • Always revising the difficult topics once in 15 days.
  • Its better to have 2 test series at max, not more than that.
  • 1 week before exam I would suggest everyone to revise previous year gate questions of the common subjects of all the branches. For example, control systems is common to ec/ee/in so revise all the question.

Gradeup: What would you say are the important topics and preparation sources(books/study material etc) to prepare for GATE?

Rahul:

  • Everything is important, can't neglect any topic.
  • But for instrumentation people I would say, firstly cover the common subjects like control system, analog electronics, digital electronics, mathematics, then try to go for subjects like measurement, sensors, communication.
  • For previous year questions, I followed Gate Academy books, they are really nice.
  • And video lectures I followed BYJU'S Exam Prep, GATE Academy. Even for paper 1 of ESE I heavily relied on BYJU'S Exam Prep live lectures from Suraj Sir, Chandan Sir, Joshi Sir.

Gradeup: Please brief the challenges you faced during your journey

Rahul:

  • The most challenging thing was to dedicate each day for the same routine, to motivate myself. And during last 15 days before exam the urge of not giving up.
  • Trust me last 2 weeks before exam, most of the aspirants QUIT!!

Gradeup: What are the mistakes that you might have done during your preparation, that you would advise fellow aspirants to avoid?

Rahul:

  • Neglecting aptitude part. This is the most common mistake, most of the aspirants think they will practice few questions before exam, but it never happens. I lost 3 marks to this.
  • Wasting lot of time in deciding how to start, when to start. For this I would suggest, start from the easiest subject as it will help in gaining the momentum.
  • Read the question properly while giving mock exam and mostly during GATE. Trust me nervousness wreaks havoc in exam and makes us ignore a small information which is the vital part.
  • Lastly, as I had previously said most aspirants quit in the last 15 days. When you feel like that, just remember this the time to put in a little extra effort so that you get ahead of others.

Gradeup: What was your strategy in the last 1 month before the GATE exam?

Rahul:

  • I really had no strategy, but my best friend he advised me to give a lot of mock test and make a note of mistakes.
  • I revised individual topic, for example control system firstly by giving a part test, so that I could focus more on the topics that I have forgotten. This technique helped me a lot

Gradeup: How did BYJU'S Exam Prep help you in your preparation?

Rahul:

  • It helped me in my GATE as well as ESE preparation.
  • The revision lectures were fantastic. I even gave the free test provided by BYJU'S Exam Prep team.
  • I would suggest fellow aspirants to install the BYJU'S Exam Prep App for regular updates.
