The hydroxychloroquine has been making to the headlines all over the world as a possible cure for the Virus. But it must not be forgotten that the studies on which this particular idea is based, are the in vitro studies. That is to say that the studies are done in a petri dish or test tube rather than in animals or humans. The studies have shown that both hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have antiviral properties against the virus. In these studies, these medications were observed to work by interfering with the chemical environment of human cell membranes. This blocked the virus from entering and multiplying inside the cells. However, there is no surety that medication working in vitro will work once inside a human body.

Hence, if you do not feel well, don't even think to self-medicate for that may worsen the situation. Better take the advice of the experts first.

Medical use:
The main use of the Hydroxychloroquine is in the treatment of certain types of malaria, rheumatic disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, porphyria cutanea tarda, and Q fever, systemic lupus erythematosus. It is largely considered the first and most important treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus. In the cases of certain types of malaria, resistant strains, and complicated cases different or additional medications are required. In spite of being widely used as a treatment of primary Sjögren syndrome, it has not been shown to be effective, however. This particular drug is also used in the treatment of post-Lyme arthritis. It may have both an anti-inflammatory activity and an anti-spirochaete activity, similar to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

According to the drug label advisory, hydroxychloroquine should not be prescribed to individuals with known hypersensitivity to 4-aminoquinoline compounds. There are a range of other contraindications and caution is required if patients have certain heart conditions, diabetes or psoriasis.
