WBCS Exam Pattern 2022 was revised by the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) recently. Knowledge of exam patterns is very important to prepare well for the exam. Candidates who have applied for the WBCS must be aware about the latest pattern.

The WBPSC conducts the civil service exam in three stages. The WBCS exam involves prelims exam, mains exam, and interview. Candidates who want to get selected in the West Bengal services need to qualify in each stage with good marks. WBCS Exam Pattern 2022

Candidates applying for the WBCS exam need to clear each stage of the WBCS exam to be eligible to be called for the next round. The WBCS Prelims Exam is used only for the purpose of screening out nonserious candidates. WBCS exam pattern for prelims consists of only one paper whereas the mains exam has 6 compulsory papers and two optional papers.

Only Group A & B posts candidates need to appear for the optional subject. For Group C & D posts candidates only 6 papers are compulsory for the mains exam.

Out of 6 compulsory papers, 4 are objective in nature and 2 are subjective. The candidate will be penalized by 10% marks secured by him/her if he/she is found guilty of disclosing the identity. Candidates securing the cutoff marks decided by the commission will be called to take the next stage WBCS Exam Pattern.

WBCS Exam Pattern 2022 for Prelims

WBPSC WBCS Prelims exam will consist of only one paper, viz., a paper on "General Studies". The paper will be of an objective type consisting of 200 multiple-choice questions.

  • The questions are divided into 8 sections. Each section has 25 questions with 25 marks.
  • The Sections are divided based on subjects which are English Composition, General Science, Current Affairs, History, Geography, Polity and Economy, Indian National Movement, General Mental Ability.
  • The standard of the paper will be of the level of knowledge as expected of a graduate of any faculty of a recognized university.
  • The marks obtained from this exam are not considered in the final result.
  • It is only a screening test to admit students to the main examination.
  • There shall be a negative marking 1/3rd for each wrong answer.
  • The paper includes questions covering the following fields of knowledge.

WBCS Mains Exam Pattern 2022

The Main examination shall consist of six compulsory papers and one optional subject consisting of two papers (Only for a candidate applying for group A and/or B) to be chosen by the candidates from the list of optional subjects. 

  • There will be two papers of the optional subjects and WBCS Total Marks will be 200 marks each.
  • Each paper, Compulsory or optional, will carry 200 marks and will be of 3 hours duration.
  • Out of six compulsory papers, four papers i.e. (i) General studies-I, (ii) General studies-II, (iii) The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India and (iv) Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning will be of MCQ type to be answered in OMR answer sheets and remaining two compulsory papers i.e. Paper-I and Paper-II will be of conventional type written examination.

WBCS Mains Optional Papers

  • Paper I- 200 marks
  • Paper-II- 200 Marks

One subjects have to be selected from a list of Optional subjects. Both the papers will be for 3 hours and essay type.

Note- Group ‘A’ & ‘B’: All 6 compulsory papers and one optional subject consisting of two papers. Group ‘C’ & ‘D’: All 6 compulsory papers.

WBCS Personality Test

All those candidates who qualify for the mains examination will be invited for a personality test i.e. the interview. The final list of recommended aspirants will be based on the total marks obtained in the Main exam and the personality test.
