1. India's GDP May Contract By 6.4% This Year, Predicts Care Ratings

  • Ratings agency Care Ratings revised India's GDP  forecast to predict that it may contract by 6.4 per cent as economic activity continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Earlier, in May, the rating agency had projected a decline in GDP growth of 1.5 to 1.6 per cent assumption that  lockdown will be ending by the month-end.
  • As far as Gross Value Added (GVA) across sectors are concerned, the agency predicted agriculture to grow at 2.5 per cent, while it said that secondary sectors (manufacturing, mining and electricity) will contract 9.5 per cent and services sector by 6.5 per cent.
  • However, it added that even production in agriculture sector will be handicapped due to base year effect as growth was high last year, at 4 per cent.

2. GoI extends tenure of Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as NHAI Chairman

  • The extension of Sukhbir Singh Sandhu's tenure as the chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been approved by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). His tenure has been extended for a period of six months beyond 21st of July 2020 to 21st of January 2021.

3. ‘Fit Hai to Hit Hai India’ under Fit India Campaign launched

  • Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and Ministry of Minority Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju interacted with students here today under the Fit India campaign by the Government of India.
  • Olympic medal winner badminton player Ms P.V Sindhu and Indian football team Captain Shri. Sunil Chhetri were also present at the “Fit Hai To Hit Hai India” program organized under the Fit India campaign.
  • During this live interaction, all the dignitaries held detailed talks on being fit and enumerated the importance of fitness.The Fit India Talks sessions are being organized in association with the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

4. NLC and Coal India to form JVC for Developing Solar and Thermal Power Assets

  • NLC India Ltd and Coal India have signed an agreement for formation of a Joint Venture Company (JVC) to develop solar and thermal power assets to the tune of 5000 MW on pan-India basis.
  • The equity participation in the proposed JVC between Coal India and NLC will be in the ratio of 50:50.
  • This joint venture company marks a new era in the power sector, with the synergy and expertise of two central public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Coal.

5. Maharashtra Government and UKIBC signs MoU

  • The UK India Business Council today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), the premier industrial infrastructure development agency of the Government of Maharashtra.
  • This business framework between the UKIBC and Government of Maharashtra will help the State to proactively better its business environment and strengthen its collaboration with British business. 
  • Maharashtra Government and UK India Business Council extend MoU to foster sustainable business relations between UK and India.
  • The MoU was signed at a virtual roundtable by Dr. P Anbalagan, CEO of MIDC and Mr. Kevin McCole, Managing Director, UKIBC in the presence of Mr. B Venugopal Reddy, Principal Secretary, Industries, Government of Maharashtra, Alan Gemmell, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner, South Asia, Department of International Trade and a range of major UK investors in Maharashtra.

6. Mangalyaan captures Image of Mars Biggest Natural Satellite ‘Phobos’

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved yet another feat for India's technological progress in the space sector.
  • Now, the Mars Colour Camera (MCC) aboard ISRO's Mars Orbiter Mission, also called the Mangalyaan, has managed to capture an image of Phobos, the biggest moon of Mars which the ISRO described as 'mysterious'.
  • Mars Colour Camera (MCC) onboard Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has imaged Phobos, the closest and biggest moon of Mars, on 1st July when MOM was about 7200 km from Mars and at 4200 km from Phobos.
  • The Mars Orbiter Mission was launched on November 5, 2013. Mangalyaan had entered Mars orbit on September 24, 2014, after travelling for over 10 months to cover the distance of 666 million km to reach the destination.
  • Phobos is named after the Greek god Phobos, a son of Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus) and the personification of fear (cf. phobia).

7. Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry will launch TOPS for Junior Athletes

  • The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju on Friday said that the government will launch Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for junior athletes to groom them for 2024 and 2028 Olympics.
  • The sports minister made the announcement during the 'Fit Hai to Hit Hai India' webinar which was attended by Union Human Resources Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Indian shuttler PV Sindhu and Indian football team skipper Sunil Chhetri.
  • "We're going to start TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) for juniors too. If we identify 10 to 12-yr-old talents today, the government will take care of them, so they'll be ready for 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics," said Rijiju.
  • The Fit India Talks sessions are being organised in association with the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

8. Football: India bags right to host Women's Asian Cup 2022

  •  India has bagged the right to host the Women's Asian Cup 2022. The Asian Football Confederation awarded the hosting rights of the tournament to India after the AFC Women's Football Committee meeting today.
  • In February, the AFC Women's Football Committee had recommended India to be hosts. This is the first time that India will be hosting the event since 1979, in which India had finished as the runner-ups.
  • AFC General Secretary Dato Windsor John has written a letter to the All India Football Federation, AIFF, confirming the decision.
  • AIFF President Praful Patel said that the tournament will galvanize the aspiring women players and bring in a holistic social revolution as far as women's football in the country is concerned. 
  • The tournament comes as the latest boost to AIFF as India are slated to host the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup next year.
  • India had also hosted the AFC U-16 Championships in 2016 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.
  • AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said that the tournament comes on the back of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2020 and will help India sustain and build on the momentum gained.

9. Modi announces app innovation challenge to promote Indian platforms

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the new Digital Indian AatmaNirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge aimed at improving the Indian app ecosystem.
  • The project was launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in partnership with the Atal Innovation Mission and government think-tank Niti Aayog.
  • The project aims to promote existing Indian apps and also the development of new apps. The government says it will first identify the “best Indian apps" that citizens are using already and have the potential to scale and become world class apps in their respective categories, in Track 1 of the challenge.
  • Track 2 of the challenge will identify companies and entrepreneurs who can build apps for the country. The second track will run longer than the first.
  • The innovation challenge can be accessed through the MyGov platform and will begin from July 4. Companies will have to submit their entries by July 18 through an online submission process. 
  • The government has allocated 20 lakh, 15 lakh and 10 lakh for the first, second and third placed apps in each category. There may also be sub-categories, where winners will get 5 lakh, 3 lakh and 2 lakh for first, second and third position, respectively.

10. China's badminton legend Lin Dan announces retirement

  • China's badminton legend Lin Dan announced his retirement on Saturday. 
  • China's two-time Olympic badminton champion Lin Dan announced his retirement in a social media post on Saturday (July 4), thanking his family and fans.
  • The news means that the 36-year-old, who took golds at the Beijing and London Games, will not be competing in the next Olympics in Tokyo.
  • The Chinese badminton great, fondly called "Super Dan" by fans across the world, announced his retirement on social media by ending his glorious 20-year national team career.
  • Lin, arguably the greatest player in the sport's history, also won all the major titles, including five gold medals at the world championships between 2006 and 2013 and six All England crowns.
  • The left-handed shuttler also helped China to six gold medals in the Thomas Cup men’s team event and five titles in the mixed Sudirman Cup.
  • He also helped the national side to three gold medals in team event and two individual singles titles at the Asian Games.

11. ADB Becomes Observer Of Network For Greening The Financial System

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has joined the central banks and supervisors Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) as an observer.
  • NGFS, launched at the Paris One Planet Summit on December 12, 2017, is a group of central banks and supervisors willing to share best practices and contribute to the development of environment and climate risk management in the financial sector while mobilising mainstream finance to support the transition toward a sustainable economy.
  • "NGFS is a valuable network to share ADB's approaches and experience in addressing climate risk management in the financial sector," said ADB Chief Economist Yasuyuki Sawada.
  • ADB joins the ranks of the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, the International Monetary Fund, and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development as NGFS observers.

12.Vice President to launch ‘Elyments’ on 5th July, First Indian Social Media Online Classroom Program App

  • India has more than 500 million social media users. Yet most of these platforms are owned by companies incorporated outside India, which has spun a debate about the privacy of data and data ownership.
  • At such a time, inspired by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, more than 1000 IT professionals have come together to create the homegrown Elyments app, the first social media super-app, made in India.
  • The app will be launched on 5th July by the Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu in the presence of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Humanitarian & Founder of the Art of Living.

13. Quidich announced successful completion of India’s First NPNT Complaint Drone Flight

  • Quidich Innovation Labs Private Limited has announced that it has successfully completed the first No-Permission No-Takeoff (NPNT) compliant drone flight of India. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) identified the green field near Karnataka’s Tumkur were the first NPNT compliant drone flight of India was carried out.
  • Largely, the drone ecosystem is stuck due to three issues: lack of ownership within the government, non-operational Digital Sky platform, and the NPNT guidelines.
  • Earlier, the biggest challenge is the Civil Aviation Ministry giving low priority to the drone sector. 
  • For certified and compliant drone operations in India, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation launched the Digital Sky Platform on 1st December 2018. Under the Digital Sky platform, regulations and policies for flying Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS- means drones) were announced, as per which Nano drones can fly in India without any registration in the Digital Sky Portal or UIN.
  • The drone used for the flight is an Asteria Aerospace (Bengaluru based company) manufactured A200 micro drone. Back in October 2019, this A200 micro-drone was the first drone in India to be issued the Unique Identification Number (UIN) by the DGCA. U0000001 is the UIN of the A200 micro drone that has completed the first NPNT compliant drone flight of India. The UIN- U0000001 A200 micro drone is owned by Quidich Innovation Labs Private Limited.

14. Himachal Pradesh Plans to Provide 100 percent FHTC to all Rural Households by August 2022

  • Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat discussed the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Himachal Pradesh with Chief Minister Jairam Thakur through video conferencing on Saturday.
  • Drinking water supply is a service delivery, wherein the quantity, quality of water supplied and periodicity of water supply has to be ensured for which Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is under implementation.
  • Himachal Pradesh is planning 100% coverage by August 2022, ahead of national goal by 2024.
  • Himachal Pradesh will be one of the leading states to accomplish the ambitious target of providing tap connection to each rural household.
  • Union Minister emphasized on preparation of Village Action Plans as well as constitution of village water and sanitation committee/ Paani Samiti as a sub-committee of Gram Panchayat with minimum 50% of women members, responsible for planning, designing, implementing and operating & maintaining of in-village water supply infrastructure.
  • All villages have to prepare Village Action Plan (VAP) which essentially will comprise of development/ augmentation of drinking water sources, water supply, grey-water management and operation and maintenance component.
