1. Animals have the fundamental right to live with dignity: Delhi HC issues notice in plea to prohibit animal exhibition, training in circus

  • The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued a notice in a petition seeking a direction to prohibit the exhibition or training of animals in circuses.

  • Pursuant to a plea to save animals from suffering during the pandemic, the Court also directed the Animal Welfare Board to carry out a nationwide survey and file a report ascertaining the condition of circuses amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

  • The Petitioner has thus sought the Court's intervention to put an end to the practice of animal exhibition in circuses and has prayed for the formulation of appropriate schemes for their rehabilitation.

  • The matter would be heard next on August 14.

2. Financial assistance for lawyers amid COVID-19: Supreme Court acknowledges "dire situation"; issues notice in suo motu matter, BCI plea

  • After taking up the issue of financial assistance for lawyers amid the COVID-19 pandemic suo motu, the Supreme Court today issued notice to the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Central government in the matter.

  • A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde also issued a notice in the plea filed by the BCI drawing attention to the "precarious financial position" of lawyers due to the closure of courts amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • "We are faced with an unprecedented crisis that needs an unprecedented solution. The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the lives of citizens and especially lawyers. We are conscious of the fact that the legal fraternity is bound by rules to restrict income only to the profession and are not entitled to earn a livelihood by any other means. Closure of courts has impacted a sizeable portion of the legal profession and thus affected livelihood and income. This is a dire situation." Supreme Court.

  •  The lawyers' body stated that a significant section of the affected lawyers includes first-generation lawyers.
