List of Scheduled Commercial Banks of India 2021: Scheduled banks are banks that are listed in the 2nd schedule of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934. In this article, we are going to discuss the definitions of the bank, commercial banks, scheduled banks, scheduled commercial banks of India.

What is Bank?
- Bank can be defined as a financial institution that receives deposits and grant loans.
- The most common types of banks are:
- Retail Banks
- Corporate Banks
- Investment Banks
- Banks also deal with other financial services such as wealth management, currency exchange, and providing lockers, etc.
What are Commercial Banks?
- Commercial bank is a financial institution that performs the functions of accepting deposits from the general public and giving loans for investment with the aim of earning profit.
- Commercial bank offers other financial services like ATM, Demand Draft, Certificate of Deposits, etc as well.
- In India, commercial Banks are those scheduled and non-scheduled commercial banks that are regulated under Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
Scheduled Banks
- All those banks which are included in the second schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934 are known as Scheduled Banks.
- There are two categories of the Scheduled Banks, i.e.,
- Scheduled Commercial Banks
- Scheduled Co-operative Banks.
1. Scheduled Commercial Banks:
- Scheduled Commercial Banks in India can be classified into five categories according to their ownership and/or nature of the operation.
- State Bank of India and its Associates,
- Nationalized Banks,
- Private Sector Banks,
- Foreign Banks, and
- Regional Rural Banks.
- SBI and Associates and Nationalised Banks are commonly called Public Sector Banks.
- bank’s paid-up capital and raised funds must be at least Rs5 lakh to qualify as a scheduled bank.
2. Scheduled Co-operative banks
- They are further divided into 2 types:
- Scheduled State Co-operative banks
- Scheduled Urban Co-operative banks
Public Sector Banks:
- Public Sector Banks are those in which the Government of India holds the major portion of the shares. In other words, the GOI is the major shake holder in Public Sector Banks.

Private Sector Banks:
- As the name suggests the private sector banks are those in which the private entities hold the majority of stakes.
- In these banks, most of the capital is in private hands.
