What is a Fraction?

Fractions represent equal parts of a whole or a collection.

The fraction of a whole: When we divide a whole into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole.

Fraction notation

A fraction has two parts. The number on the top of the line is called the numerator. It tells how many equal parts of the whole or collection are taken.  The number below the line is called the denominator.  It shows the total divisible number of equal parts the whole into or the total number of equal parts which are there in a collection.

Types of Fraction:

There are in total of six types of fractions such as:

  1. Proper fraction
  2. Improper fraction
  3. Mixed fraction
  4. Like fractions
  5. Unlike fractions
  6. Equivalent fractions

1. Proper and Improper Fractions

Proper fractions are those fractions where the numerator is less than the denominator. An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator. For example, the fraction 5/6 is a proper fraction, where 6/5 is an improper fraction.

2. Mixed Numbers

A mixed number is a whole number, and a proper fraction represented together.  It generally represents a number between any two whole numbers. When an improper fraction is written as a combination of a whole number and a proper number, it becomes a mixed fraction or mixed number.

As: 6/5 = 5 + 1/5 = 5/5 + 1/5 = 1 + 1/5 = 11/5

11/2, 11/4, 23/4, 35/7, 51/9, ……….., etc., are mixed fractions.

3. Like Fractions:

The fractions having the same denominators are known as like fractions. For example:- 2/5, 3/5, 5/5, 7/5, 9/5, ….etc., are like fractions.

4.UnLike Fractions:

Fractions with different denominators (bottom numbers) are called, unlike fractions. For example:- i) ²/₃, ¹⁵/₁₃, ¹²/₁₇ and ³⁵/₁₉ are unlike fractions with different denominators (bottom numbers).

(ii) ¹/₆, ¹⁷/₁₄, ²⁵/₁₆ and ¹⁶/₂₃ are unlike fractions with different denominators (bottom numbers).
