Amazon Prime Air: Jeff Bezos Legacy

As you all must be aware that Jeff Bezos, who is regarded as the CEO, founder and president of Amazon is the world's richest man of net worth around 18,000 crore USD. Amazon revealed Amazon Prime Air in the year 2016 which merely focusses on the delivery drones to automatically fly individual packages to customers within 30 minutes of ordering. To qualify 30 minutes of delivery, the package size must be less than 2.25 kgs , must be small enough to fit into cargo box that craft will carry and it should have a delivery location within 16 kms of radius of participating Amazon order fulfillment center.

History:

  • In the year 2013, Jeff Bezos revealed plans for Amazon Prime Air in an interview. The Amazon Prime Air team worked along with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and Single European Sky ATM on trials using the amazon air traffic management system.
  • For a purpose of safety, drones will fly at low altitudes (below 400 feet).
  • As there are no roads or no proper routes, hence there are many options to go to a single point, therefore navigating a drone is not an easy task.
  • Amazon claims that their traffic management system is easy to use for various operators in the same airspace because it will connect via the internet.

First Delivery:

On December 7, 2016, Amazon successfully delivered a Prime Air parcel to Cambridge, England. Amazon had build a Prime Air fulfillment centre in the Cambridge Area. Amazon posted a video of delivery on their official YouTube channel on 14th December 2016.

Advancements:

  • There will be an increase in carrying capacities, focus area, time duration by the development of new technologies.
  • The operations were expected to begin in selected cities starting late 2019 however as of July 2020, the service is yet to materialize.
  • Amazon just got FAA (Federal Aviation Administration)  approval to operate a fleet of delivery drones. It has also debuted a brand new electric delivery drone capable of carrying packages under 5 pounds.
  • Alphabet's Wing became the first drone delivery company to receive FAA approval.
  • UPS (United Parcel Service) won approval to operate a drone fleet as an airline.
