NDA 2022: Importance of Physics and Chemistry for NDA Exam

By Dhruv Kumar|Updated : December 22nd, 2021

If you are an NDA aspirant and aiming at being an officer in Defence Forces this article is for you. Many of the students who are preparing for this exam are school or graduate students. Chemistry and Physics can be more difficult for some students (especially for non-science students) and avoiding these subjects can appear as an easy and convenient option. However, if you think about it avoiding them can be a bit risky than it seems.  So, the answer is no. You can't and should not skip Physics and Chemistry for NDA 2021 exam. Why? Let's read here now.

10 Reasons Why not to skip Physics and Chemistry for NDA 2022

1. General Studies is too much of risk

Total marks for the GAT Paper is 600 marks out this 160 marks questions are asked from Physics and Chemistry and with proper notes and guidance a non-science student can also fetch more than 80+ marks.

Now, depending just on General Studies is too much of a risk. The syllabus is vast and let’s not forget there is negative marking. More importantly, you don’t just want to qualify for the test because there are a lot of students who can qualify NDA. You want to grab a rank and a higher rank at that so that you can sure your place in the academy.

2. Physics and Chemistry: High Scoring Subjects

Most of the student attempt 85+ questions in GAT, which is good to clear the cutoff. Now to rise further in the Rank List, only Physics and Chemistry can Help You. Therefore Physics and Chemistry act as your life jackets for that matter. You may qualify the test with GAT (if you are that lucky) but you need Physics and Chemistry for scoring a good rank. So don’t be reluctant with these subjects.

3. No Major Tricks and hence no Tricky Questions

You may think that sums are difficult but they have only one correct answer. In the case of General Studies, questions can appear very easy but the answer can be tricky.

Which of the following statements about hill stations of colonial India is/are correct?

  1. The architecture of hill stations sought to recreate the European style
  2. Hill stations were developed as sanitariums where soldiers were treated for the illness
  3. Shimla became the official residence of the Commander in Chief of the Indian Army
  4. In 1864, Shimla had to be evacuated because of a Typhoid epidemic

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

  1. 1
  2. 1,2 & 3
  3. 1 & 2
  4. 3 Only

This question was asked in NDA II 2015 and well many people got it wrong.

This uncertainty of answers almost never appears in the case of Physics and Chemistry. If you are asked to balance an equation, there is only one correct balanced equation. If you have your concepts right, you can do it readily and there is no room for confusion.

4. Weightage of Questions in NDA

We should not forget that Physics and Chemistry are also just as important as History, Polity, etc.

  1. The NDA I & II 2020 General Ability Test was conducted from 14:00 to 16:30. GAT paper consists of 150 Questions of 600 marks.

Below is the division of the GA paper section-wise:

    Name of the Sub-Section

    No. of Questions asked

    English

     50

    Geography

    20

    History

    20

    Physics

    25

    Chemistry

    15

    General Science

    10

    Current Affairs

    10

Physics and Chemistry consist of more than 25% of the total number of questions asked in the exam and for non-science students skipping them would be a blunder.

5. They are Pair made in heaven

That sounds dramatic but is true. There is a reason that Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are paired together by the curriculum. For some students, the combination is Physics, Chemistry, and Maths because they use the basics of these subjects throughout school and graduation.

So try not to avoid these subjects as they are extremely important for your future studies and they play just as an important role in NDA preparation. Few tips on how you can try to develop your interest in Physics and Chemistry.

6. Maintain the balance among topics

Be precise about the topics you choose for studying. If you pick difficult and complicated topics one after the other, you make end up being exhausted and bored. Like in Chemistry, if you keep reading inorganic chemistry, the compound formed of different elements and the periodic trends, you make get confused. So try to pair up an easy chapter with a difficult one for your own convenience.

7. Consider it Compulsory to Cover

If none of the points is able to convince you that Physics and Chemistry are also important and all the three subjects together form the basics of life, just think of it as a compulsion and go for it. You wouldn’t like it if your grades are affected by any reason at all and if the reason is your mere disliking for a subject, it’s just not worth it. No matter how much you hate/dislike/fear the subjects you know you have to do it and you should do it because accept it or not Physics and Chemistry are important.

8. Connect them to real life

Try to see the significance of the concepts in real life. For example, the speed of the train and the allotment of seats in a train are all affected by the laws of Physics. The seat distribution is done by trying to keep a balance of the train, i.e., if you book your tickets really early you would get the seats in the middle compartments and the terminal compartments are filled sequentially. This helps in maintaining the speed of the train.

Linking the concepts to real-life experiences makes them a bit interesting and they don’t seem irrelevant. I personally think that students prefer Biology in Physics and Chemistry because the concepts and topics can be easily experienced. Like the presence of colored pigments. The green color of the leaves and the different colors of flowers are visible everywhere in nature. The arrangement of petals and calyx can be viewed easily. We see bees and insect transferring pollen from one flower to another all the time. So we just start doing the same thing with the other two subjects we can see their importance too.

9. Use the Internet

Today, besides your books and notes many youtube channels and websites available which will help you to understand difficult topics through their attractive PPT's, animations and interactive quizzes. Take help of them to understand the topic.

10. Make Notes and Revise
