1. India, US reiterate their firm commitment to strategic partnership & shared priorities

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to US President-elect Joe Biden and congratulated him. During the telephonic conversation, the two leaders reiterated their firm commitment to the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed the shared priorities and concerns - Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region.
  • The Prime Minister also conveyed warm congratulations for US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. 
  • Mr Modi said, her success is a matter of great pride and inspiration for members of the vibrant Indian-American community, who are a tremendous source of strength for Indo-US relations.

2. Education Minister virtually launches AICTE's Lilavati Award-2020

  • Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” virtually launched Lilavati Award-2020: AICTE's Innovative education program to empower women yesterday. With women empowerment as the theme, the objective of the award is to create awareness about issues like sanitation, hygiene, health, nutrition, literacy, and employment among women.
  • Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized on the necessity to impart quality education to girl child to make them self-reliant, confident and successful. He said that the theme of the award -‘women empowerment’ has always been the top priority of the government.
  • Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Government has launched several welfare schemes for the overall development of girl child and women such as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and CBSE Udaan Scheme.
  • The Minister added that with the Lilavati Award-2020, AICTE has once again championed the cause of women empowerment and paved a way towards equality in education and innovation.

3. Goldman Sachs Projects India’s GDP Forecast at -10.3% in FY21

  • Goldman Sachs projects India’s GDP for 2020 at -8.9%; For 2021 at 10%; 2022 at 7.2%
  • Goldman Sachs has made the following projections for GDP growth rate of India in its latest report titled V(accine)-Shaped Recovery’:
  • Calendar Year 2020= -8.9%
  • Calendar Year 2021= 10.3%
  • Calender Year 2022= 7.2%

4. Novak Djokovic after lifting year-end No. 1 trophy for 6th time

  • Australian Open 2020 winner Novak Djokovic was on Sunday given the ATP Tour No. 1 trophy for finishing as the top ranked player for the sixth time in his career. With it, he became only the second player in tennis history to do so, after Pete Sampras.
  • This was the sixth year he finished as world No. 1, having earlier done it in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018.
  • Among past players, only Pete Sampras has managed to finish six years on top of the rankings which he did between 1993 and 1998.

5. Cow Cabinet: A new cabinet in Madhya Pradesh to conserve cows

  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced that the state government will constitute a 'Cow Cabinet' for the conservation and promotion of cow cattle in the state.

  • "Animal Husbandry, Forest, Panchayat and Rural Development, Revenue, Home and Farmers Welfare Department will be included in the 'cow cabinet'. The first meeting of the 'cow cabinet' will be held on November 22 at 12 noon on the day of Gopashtami at Gau Sanctuary Salaria Agar Malwa," said the CM.

  • The MP government, however, is yet to come up with more details of powers and responsibilities of the cow cabinet.

  • The decision comes a day after the Madhya Pradesh MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra told reporters that the state is mulling to bring a law against ‘love jihad’. Mishra had said non-bailable charges would be applicable in cases of ‘love jihad’ in Madhya Pradesh and would attract a jail term of five years if found guilty.

6. RBI to set up Reserve Bank Innovation Hub under S. Gopalakrishnan

  • RBI announced setting up of Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) to promote innovation across the financial sector by leveraging on technology and fostering innovation.
  • RBIH will be guided and managed by Governing Council (GC) led by a Chairperson. GC consist of:

    • CEO: To be appointed
    • Ashok Jhunjhunwala
    • Krishnamurthy
    • Gopal Srinivasan
    • P. Hota

7. Asia’s first solar power textile mill to come in Maharashtra

  • First solar power-enabled Textile Mill in Asia is coming up in Parbhani district of Maharashtra
  • Jai Bhawani women's cooperative textile mill will be the first in Asia to operate on solar power.
  • It is spread across thirty acres of land and will process cotton to cloth providing jobs to women in the parbhani district
  • Chairman of solar textile mill: Sampriya Rahul Patil
  • Parbhani is the leading cotton producing district in Maharashtra.
  • Total cost of project: Rs 100 crore 

 

8. Digital museum inaugurates Maharaj Bada in Gwalior

  • This digital museum is developed by Gwalior Smart City and entry for the public is being made free for a few days.
  • Digital Museum will have 16 galleries to showcase the architectural styles, objects, costumes, lifestyle, musical instruments, jewelry, handicrafts, cultural tradition, painting and many genres of paintings in a modern way.
  • It covers 3500 square feet area.

  • He made his debut for Scunthorpe United and later joined Tottenham, Liverpool and England

  • He was part of winning team for 3 European Cups, 5 League titles, 2 UEFA Cups, UEFA Online Classroom Program Cup and League Cup with Liverpool

 

12. RBI names 2 startups as a part of its regulatory sandbox programme

  • RBI has announced the names of two startups that have been selected under its regulatory sandbox programme. They are:
    • Jaipur based Natural Support Consultancy Services Private Limited with its product ‘eRupaya’
    • New Delhi based Nucleus Software Exports Limited with product ‘PaySe’
  • The programme shortlisted 6 companies out of 32 entities that had applied
  • Regulatory sandbox is a protected environment within which the selected companies will show their system preparedness 

 

13. Dominic Thiem defeats 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal

  • Dominic Thiem defeated 20-time Tennis Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal (Spain) in straight sets at the ATP Finals in London by 7-6, 7-6.
  • Dominic Thiem is from Austria and is World number three Tennis player
  • Earlier, Thiem had beaten reigning champion Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in his opening round-robin match and will qualify for the semi-finals if Tsitsipas beats Andrey Rublev later.
  • Nadal defeated Rublev in their opener and will play next will Tsitsipas 

 

14. Haryana’s first woman MP Chandrawati passes away

  • Haryana’s first woman MP and former Puducherry Lt.-Governor Chandrawati (92 years) passed away at Rohtak’s PGIMS hospital
  • She became the first-ever woman MP from Haryana in 1977 after defeating Chaudhary Bansi Lal from Bhiwani constituency
  • She served as the Lt.-Governor of Puducherry from 19 February 1990 to 13 December 1990.
  • She was residing in Charkhi Dadri district and was a native of Dalawas village.

 

15. HDFC Bank, IndusInd in 'red flag' list on nearing foreign investment cap

  • HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank have been put in the ‘red flag’ list for monitoring foreign portfolio investor (FPI) limits.
  • Listed company enters the red flag list when Their foreign investment is within/less than 3% of the permissible NRI/FPI limits 
  • FPIs can invest up to 74% in both HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank.
  • Current FPI shareholding in HDFC Bank is 71.3%, and of IndusInd Bank is 73.1%
  • Other companies on the list: Novartis India and Procter & Gamble Health Care 

 

16. 28 additional judges of Allahabad High Court made permanent

  • President of India under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, appointed 28 Additional Judges as Permanent Judges of Allahabad High Court.
  • With a sanctioned strength of 160 judges and number of cases registered, Allahabad High Court is the largest of 25 High Courts in India
  • High Court Judge shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal after consultation with CJI, Governor of the State and chief Justice of that High court.

 

17. Japanese Nobel laureate physicist Masatoshi Koshiba passes away

  • Japanese physicist Masatoshi Koshiba (94 years) passed away at the Edogawa Hospital in Tokyo
  • He jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002 along with Raymond Davis Jr for his pioneering work in astrophysics and detection of cosmic neutrinos
  • Honours:
    • Asahi Prize in 1987
    • Nishina Memorial Prize in 1987
    • Humboldt Prize in 1997
    • Wolf Prize in Physics in 2000
    • Panofsky Prize in 2002
    • Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics in 2003
