Haryana Special: Famous Sports Personalities

Haryana is one of the 28 states in India, Chandigarh is the state capital, Faridabad in National Capital Region is the most populous city of the state, and Gurugram is a leading financial hub of the NCR, with major Fortune 500 companies located in it. Haryana has 6 administrative divisions, 22 districts, 72 sub-divisions, 93 revenue tehsils, 50 sub-tehsils, 140 community development blocks, 154 cities and towns, 6,848 villages, and 6222 villages panchayats.

In the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi, 22 out of 38 gold medals that India won came from Haryana. During the 33rd National Games held in Assam in 2007, Haryana stood first in the nation with a medal tally of 80, including 30 gold, 22 silver and 28 bronze medals.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev made his domestic-cricket debut playing for Haryana. Nahar Singh Stadium was built in Faridabad in the year 1981 for international cricket. This ground can hold around 25,000 people as spectators. 

Haryana is home to Haryana Gold, one of India's eight professional basketball teams which compete in the country's UBA Pro Basketball League.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics and the fourth female Olympic medalist from the country. Notable Badminton Player, Saina Nehwal is from Hisar in Haryana.

Famous Personality of Haryana State:

1. Kapil Dev- 

Kapil Dev was born on 6 January 1959. He is a former Indian cricket player. He was a fast bowler and a hard-hitting middle-order batsman. He is known as one of the greatest all-rounders and the greatest captain in the history of cricket. 

Kapil Dev captained the Indian cricket team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was India's national cricket coach between October 1999 and August 2000. He retired in 1994, holding the world record for the greatest number of wickets taken in Test cricket. He was also India's highest wicket-taker in both major forms of cricket, Tests and ODIs. He is the first player to take 200 ODI wickets. He is the only player in the history of cricket to have taken more than 400 wickets (434 wickets) and scored more than 5000 runs in Tests. On 11 March 2010, Dev was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

Kapil Dev made an impressive debut for Haryana in November 1975 against Punjab with a 06 wicket haul, restricting Punjab to just 63 runs and helping Haryana to victory. He finished the season with 121 wickets in 30 matches. His greatest feats were to lead India almost jauntily, and by his all-around example, to the 1983 World Cup, and to take the world record. He won the Indian cricketer of the century award in 2002 and went on to coach the Indian team post-retirement.

2. Sakshi Malik-

Sakshi Malik was born on 3 September 1992 in Mokhra village of Haryana's Rohtak district She is an Indian freestyle wrestler. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. She is a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program. Sakshi Malik had previously won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha. She began training in wrestling at the age of 12 under a coach, Ishwar Dahiya, at an Akhara in Chhotu Ram Stadium, Rohtak.

Malik's first success as a professional wrestler in the international arena came in 2010 at the Junior World Championships where she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg freestyle event. At the 2014 Dave Schultz International Tournament, she won gold in the 60 kg category. And after that, she never stopped and maintained her passion and dedication to the game.

Malik is currently employed with Indian Railways in the commercial department of its Delhi division, in the Northern Railway zone and is a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program. Following her bronze medal win at Rio, she was promoted from senior clerk to gazetted officer rank.

Malik has completed a master's degree in physical education from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak. In September 2016, she was appointed as the university's wrestling director.

3. Geeta Phogat-

Geeta Phogat was born on 15 December 1988 in Balali village of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana. She is a freestyle wrestler who won India's first-ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. She is also the first Indian female wrestler to have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games.  Her father Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler himself and a Dronacharya Award recipient, is also her coach. She married fellow wrestler Pawan Kumar on 20 November 2016.

In the 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship Phogat won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held in Jalandhar, Punjab between 19 and 21 December 2009. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games.  She won India’s first-ever gold medal in women’s wrestling at the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.

In the 2012 Summer Olympics Phogat won a gold medal in the Wrestling FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament that concluded in Almaty, Kazakhstan in April 2012. In the 2012 World Wrestling Championships held in Canada, Phogat won the bronze medal. In the 2012 Asian Wrestling Championships, Phogat was able to contest in the bronze medal round and won the bronze medal in the 55 kg category, beating Sumiya Erdenechimeg from Mongolia. In the 2013 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships tournament held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Phogat won the silver medal in the women's freestyle 59 kg category. 

4. Babita Kumari-

Babita Kumari Phogat was born on 20 November 1989. She is an Indian female wrestler, who won the gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She also won silver medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships. Babita Phogat entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019. In the 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship tournament held in Jalandhar, Punjab, Babita won the gold medal in the women's freestyle 51 kg category. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games  Babita won the silver medal in the women's freestyle 51 kg category. In the 2011 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship tournament held in Melbourne, Australia, Babita won the gold medal in the women's freestyle 48 kg category. At the 2012 World Wrestling Championships, she won a bronze medal which she won in the women's freestyle 51 kg category.

In the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship tournament in New Delhi, India, Babita won the bronze medal in the women's freestyle 55 kg category. In the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the women's freestyle 55 kg category win the gold medal. Babita Kumari Phogat won the silver medal in women's 53 kg freestyle wrestling at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Gold Coast. 

5. Yogeshwar Dutt-

Yogeshwar Dutt was born on 2 November 1982 in Bhainswal Kalan village in the Sonipat district of Haryana. He is an Indian freestyle wrestler. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the 60 kg category. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013. He won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He was awarded to Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2012 given by the Government of India

6. Yuzvendra Chahal-

Yuzvendra Chahal born on July 23, 1990 (30 years) in Jind,  Haryana. He is an Indian cricketer and former chess player who represents India in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and has also represented India internationally in chess at youth levels.

He plays for Haryana in Indian domestic cricket and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. He is a leg-break bowler and the second player in T20 history to have taken a 6-wicket haul. He is a  fine right-arm leg-spinner, who made his first-class debut at the age of 19 against Madhya Pradesh at Indore. Though he has not played many first-class games, he has been impressive in the shortest format and it also earned him an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians in 2011.
