Defence Current Affairs: Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS)

Recently, Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) project director and senior researcher of n (DRDO) Shailendra V Gade made a bold claim by saying that the indigenously-developed weapon was the 'best gun in the world' to meet the Indian Army's full requirement of 1800 artillery guns systems. 

Recently, Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) project director and senior researcher of n (DRDO) Shailendra V Gade made a bold claim by saying that the indigenously-developed weapon was the 'best gun in the world' to meet the Indian Army's full requirement of 1800 artillery guns systems. 

According to some media reports, The Indian Army was initially looking to acquire approximately 1600 artillery guns from the DRDO and an additional 400 Israeli-made ATHOS guns. 

The ATAGS program was started 8 years ago, is a success story to transform itself into an Atma Nirbhar nation in defence. When the project started, two strategic partners: – 

  1. Bharat Forge Limited and 
  2. Tata Power SED – 

were came together in and within a period of just 30 months, the product was developed.

 About ATAGS

  • The ATAGS is a towed 155 mm/52 calibre howitzerthe longest firing howitzer in the world with 48 km.
  • It is also the only gun in the 155m family that has achieved a firing range of 48km.
  • It is developed by DRDO and manufactured by Bharat Forge and Tata Power SED.
  • ATAGS has greater than 95% of indigenous content.
  • ATAGS has a barrel, breech mechanism, muzzle brake and recoil mechanism.

  • The gun is two-ton lighter than guns of the same category, designed to provide better accuracy and range. 
  • It is capable of firing five successive rounds in short duration whereas the others can fire only three.
  • Its range is also very high at 48 kilometres. The gun Bofors, also used by Indian Army, can fire at 32kms using the same type of round.
  • The mobility is also very high and It is the only one capable of firing a Bi-Modular Charge System Zone 7 propellant. 

Over the last 4 years, the ATAGS howitzer has undergone extensive testing, is considered as the most advanced guns in the world.
