This year’s information bulletin states that the CAT Normalization Process 2022 will account for changes in the scale and location of score distributions across various forms.

The candidates who are preparing for the upcoming exam must have a basic clearance of the concept of the CAT Exam Normalization Process. What is CAT Normalization Process?

In short, it is a process of calculating the CAT percentile without any bias. Common Admission Test CAT is a national-level MBA Entrance Exam organised by IIMs to shortlist the candidates for MBA admissions into Top Business Schools such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Indore, FMS Delhi, XIMB, IIM Bangalore etc. This year CAT will be conducted in 3 slots, and its question papers for three sessions will be administered by the authority. It is because there may be a disparity in the CAT Question Paper difficulty level.

For this reason, CAT Normalization Process is adopted to evaluate each candidate’s performance on a single scale. That means the examination authority makes sure that every candidate is evaluated equally by doing this. Before understanding the CAT Normalization Process2022, the candidates must understand the two most important terms: Scaled Score and Percentile Score.

CAT Normalization Process: Scaled Score

The Scaled Score in CAT means calculating the score of each section of the exam. Based on the concept of the CAT Normalization Process, it is a statistical procedure used to change the results of two or more alternative evaluation forms to compare the results. The candidates appearing in the upcoming exam must check and prepare the CAT Syllabus well. It will help them to make a comprehensive CAT Preparation for all the chapters and topics of the exam.

CAT Normalization Process: Concept of Percentile

The percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a specific candidate is known as the CAT Percentile. A candidate performed better than 99% of all CAT test takers that year, for instance, if the candidate’s CAT percentile is 99.

The exam authority calculates the percentile using the below formula:

P = (1-R/N)*100

Here, P= CAT Percentile, R= Candidates’ Rank after CAT Normalization Process and N= Number of appeared Candidates.

How to Calculate Score in CAT Normalization Process 2022?

CAT Result 2022 cum scorecard will contain not only the raw score but scaled scores for each of the following sections along with the CAT Percentile:

  • Section I: VARC
  • Section II: DILR
  • Section III: QA

Below mentioned are the steps to calculate the scores using CAT Normalization Process. For clarity, let us choose the VARC section as an example.

Step 1: The mean and standard deviation from the raw scores in the VARC section for all candidates who will appear in the morning shift will be calculated. Let the mean of the morning shift be M1 and the standard deviation (SD) of the morning shift be S1.

  • G1 = M1 + S1

Step 2: Similarly, the calculation of the mean and the standard deviation from the raw scores in the VARC Section for all candidates who will appear in the afternoon shift will be done. Let the mean for the afternoon shift be M2 and the standard deviation (SD) for afternoon shift be S2.

  • G2 = M2 + S2

Step 3: The mean and the standard deviation from the raw scores in the VARC Section for all candidates who will appear in the evening shift will also be calculated. Let the mean for the evening shift be M3 and the standard deviation (SD) for the evening shift be S3.

  • G3 = M3 + S3

Step 4: Then, the mean and the standard deviation of the raw scores in the VARC section for all candidates who will appear in morning, afternoon and evening shifts will be calculated. Let Mean be M and Standard Deviation (SD) be: S

  • G = M + S

Step 5: Now, the mean Raw Score in CAT in the VARC section of the top 0.1% of students who are appearing in the morning shift shall be calculated.

Step 6: Calculate the mean CAT Raw Score in the VARC section of the top 0.1% of students who are appearing in the afternoon shift.

Step 7: Similarly, the mean raw score in the VARC section of the top 0.1% of students who are appearing in the evening shift shall be calculated.

For the rest of the section, the same method shall be used. Therefore, the scaled score is equal to the grand total scaled score of CAT for of VARC, DILR, and QA sections.

Advantages of Normalization Process for CAT

With the help of the CAT Normalization Process, the authorities can give guarantee that all the candidates are evaluated on a common basis. They make sure of honesty and integrity in the performance of the student in each of the sessions. So through the CAT Normalization Process 2022, their score will come as an individual percentile. Normally, the scores are normalized multiple times, as per the official information by the CAT Authorities.

The percentiles are obtained by converting the CAT Normalization score. On this basis of the percentile, the candidates will be selected for the further round.
