Definition:

  • Quality is doing the right things right and is uniquely defined by each individual.
  • A product or process that is Reliable, and that performs its intended function is said to be a quality product. The degree to which something meets or exceeds the expectations of its consumers.
  • Quality is inversely proportional to variability.
  • Quality means fitness for use. There are two general aspects of fitness for use: quality of design and quality of conformance.

Consequences of poor Quality:

  • Causing Problems with Productivity.
  • Poor quality of product increases production and market costs.
  • Damage or injuries resulting from faulty design.

There are three types of quality.

(i)  Quality of design:

  • Design must be simple and less expensive to meet the customer’s product or service expectations.
  • Quality of design influenced by factors like product type, cost, profit policy, demand of the product, availability of parts and material, product reliability, competing element etc.

(ii) Quality of conformance:

  • It is meeting the standards defined in the design phase after the product is manufactured or while the service is delivered.

(iii) Quality of Performance:

  • Quality of performance is how well the product functions or service performs when put to use.

Dimensions of Quality:

The quality of a product can be described and evaluated in several ways. It is often very important to differentiate these different dimensions of quality.
