History and Significance of the Nobel Prize: The Nobel Prize in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Economic Sciences, Physiology or Medicine, and Peace Prize is one of the most distinguished honors in the world. The winners are known as laureates, and they get a gold medal, diploma, and a cash reward of ten million Swedish Kronor.

Sir Alfred Nobel's bequest resulted in the establishment of the awards. His will directed that the prize be given to those persons who had done the most good for humanity in the previous year. The award money is derived from Alfred Nobel's bequest.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences bestows prizes in chemistry, physics, and economic sciences, while the Karolinska Institute bestows the prize on physiology or medicine and the Swedish Academy bestows the medal on literature. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, located in Oslo, bestows the Nobel Peace Prize. The announcement of the Nobel Prizes for 2021 began on October 4 and will end on October 11, 2021.

Here is the list of Nobel Prize winners from India:

Rabindranath Tagore (1913)

Rabindranath Tagore was the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize. He received the Nobel prize when India was still a colony of East India Company/ Britain.

He got the Nobel prize for literature viz. for Gitanjali or Song Offerings, a collection of poems. Tagore was a poet, artist, author, and thinker. He was given the knighthood from Britain in honor of his work.

He composed the national anthem for two countries: India and Bangladesh. India – Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh – Amar Sonar Bangla.

CV Raman (1930)

CV Raman got the Nobel prize for his contribution to the field of Physics. He was the second Nobel Prize winner from India for his distinguished work in the scattering of light.

His research is known as the Raman Effect or Raman scattering. He was also the first Asian to be awarded the Nobel prize in the field of Science. He was also the recipient of Bharat Ratna.

Har Gobind Khurana (1968)

Har Gobind Khurana was born in Raipur, he then moved to the United States of America and became an American citizen.
He got the Nobel prize for his distinguished research on genetics. He shared the Nobel prize with his fellow researcher Marshall W. Nirenberg.

Mother Teresa (1979)

Mother Teresa moved to India when she was 19. She was originally born in Serbia. She dedicated her life to serving and uplifting the needy and the poor. She was trained and taught in Darjeeling and later she started working through the organization ‘Missionaries of Charity'. Her strife to end poverty made her win the Nobel Prize in 1979.

Subramanyam Chandrashekhar (1983)

He was born in Lahore when India was colonized by Britain. Later, he moved to the United States and gained citizenship of the country. His uncle was CV Raman who as stated earlier was also a Nobel Prize winner. He got the Nobel prize for his contribution to the field of Physics.

Amartya Sen (1998)

Amartya Sen was born and raised in Kolkata. He got the Nobel Prize for his contribution in the field of Economics and for his work on welfare Economics. The famous book ‘The Argumentative Indian’ was written by Amartya Sen.

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (2009)

Ramakrishnan was born in Tamil Nadu. He has won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He is also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushana. His works include distinguished contributions in RNA structural ribosomes.

Kailash Satyarthi (2014)

Bachpan Bachao Andolan is an NGO founded by this iconic figure to strive against child labor and to secure the rights of children.

As a child activist, he has liberated nearly 1 lakh children from child labor, trafficking, and slavery. He shared his Nobel Prize in Peace with Malala Yousafzai.

Abhijit Banerjee (2019)

Born and educated mostly in India, he is a recent addition to the Nobel Prize Winners’ List. He has won the Nobel Prize in Economics and shares it with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. Their work was based on alleviating global poverty. He presently lives and works in the United States.
