SLAT Reading Comprehension Preparation: Syllabus, Questions, Topics, Preparation Books and More

By Vijeta Bhatt|Updated : March 20th, 2023

Reading Comprehension is one of the most important topics of the English language, particularly in the case of SLAT 2023 because the whole section of the English Language section comprises Reading Comprehension. So, it is imperative for us to improve our reading skills. Also, RCs are primarily used to gauge a candidate’s Knowledge of two elements i.e. Vocabulary and Text Comprehension.

This is so because both these elements play a crucial role in the better understanding of the passage i.e. for understanding a text, one must have a better knowledge of vocabulary. However, out of the above two elements, Text Comprehension is much more varied and complex.  Strategies

SLAT Reading Comprehension Pattern

Nowadays, the questions basically asked in Reading Comprehension are inference-based i.e. the questions are indirect and one has to find out the answer within the context of the passage. Also, there can be one or more conclusions given in the question which are asked to be true/false, per the question.

As per the SLAT 2023 new exam pattern, a total of 12 questions will be asked for 12 marks.

Best Way to Solve Reading Comprehension in SLAT Exam

Now let’s grasp the approach we should follow while attempting an RC in the SLAT 2023 Entrance exam.

  • First, read the given passage and then answer the question that follows. Let's discuss this approach in detail.
  • Make notes while solving/ reading RCs. It is important to highlight the appropriate information and also keep a mental bookmark, as it helps in a better understanding of the topic.

While making notes, one must look towards these things:

  1. The subject of the passage – thoroughly understand what the author is trying to say
  2. The theme of the passage – What the author’s views are regarding the subject.
  3. The tone of the author of the passage - The manner in which the author has expressed his/her opinions.

As soon as you figure out the above three things and the central point of the passage, you will come to terms with the gist [GI – general Idea + S – Structure + T- Tone] of the passage. This will also help you to build a thematic structure and logical order of the passage. Ultimately, it will allow you to answer questions from particular parts of the passage.

However, this approach is only beneficial for people with fast reading speeds. Then, what approach should one follow to solve an RC?

Given below is an approach that one must try.

  • Don’t read the entire passage in one go. Critically examine the first and the last paragraph of the Passage. Usually, the crux of the passage can be identified in the first few lines of the passage, which, in the case of longer passages, takes up roughly 1/3rd of the passage. For the rest of the passage, quickly examine what the author’s views are regarding the subject.

Also for longer passages, try to write the central point of the passage by examining paragraphs individually and then combining the results.

Next, you need to identify the structural word that tells you the Important Ideas or Transitions in a passage. These words Play a specific yet significant role in the whole context of the paragraph.
