EIU’s Worldwide Cost of Living Index 2021

  • The Worldwide Cost of Living Index 2021 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has listed the world’s most expensive cities to live in 2021.
  • Tel Aviv, Israel has become the world's most expensive city to live in, surpassing Paris and Singapore.

Key Points

  • The index explored the cost of living in 173 cities, 40 more than last year.
  • It stated that prices for goods and services have risen by 3.5 percent year-on-year, the highest inflation rate seen in the last five years.

Expert Group unveils report on the base revision of Wage Rate Index (WRI) to 2016=100 from base 1963-65=100.

  • Recently, the Central government released the new series of Wage Rate Index (WRI)with base year 2016=100, being compiled and maintained by Labour Bureau, an attached office of the Ministry of Labour & Employment.  
  • The new series of WRI with base 2016=100 will replace the old series with base 1963-65=100.
  • Expert Group also released Wage Rate Index (WRI) from July 2016 to July 2020 based on the new series 2016=100.

Key Points

  • The Report on “New Series of Wage Rate Index (Base 2016=100)” is an important publication meant to give insights into the concepts, definitions and methodology related to the new series of WRI with 2016 as the base year.
  • Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on WRI constituted by the Ministry of Labour & Employment under the chairmanship of Dr. G.C. Manna, former DG, CSO, provided all technical inputs for the construction of the New WRI Series.

  • The All India Wage Rate Index Number for all the 37 industries stood at 119.7 in 2020 (half-yearly 2) which shows an increment of 1.6 per cent over the index in 2020 (half-yearly 1).
  • At the sector level, the highest Wage Rate Index in 2020 (half-yearly 2) was reported in Plantation Sector (126.5) followed by Manufacturing Sector (119.6) and Mining Sector (116.7).
  • Among 37 Industries covered, the highest Wage Rate Index was recorded in Drugs & Medicines (131.4), followed by Sugar (129.8), Motor Cycles (128.1), Jute Textiles (127.9) and Tea Plantation (127.7). On the other hand, the lowest Wage Rate Index was recorded in Rubber Plantation (106.7), followed by Paper (110.7), Castings & Forgings (111.3), Woollen Textiles (111.9) and Synthetic Textiles (112.0).

  • Recently, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)has completed 100 years.

Key Points

  • The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is a committee of selected members of parliament, constituted by the Parliament of India, for the purpose of auditing the revenue and the expenditure of the Government of India.
  • This committee along with the Estimates committee (EC) and Committee on Public Undertakings (COPU) are the three financial standing committees of the Parliament of India.

About Public Accounts Committee (PAC):

  • The Public Accounts Committee was introduced in 1921 after its first mention in the Government of India Act, 1919 also called Montford Reforms.
  • The Public Accounts Committee is now constituted every year under Rule 308 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha.
  • It presently comprises 22 members (15 members elected by the Lok Sabha Speaker, and 7 members elected by the Rajya Sabha Chairman) with a term of one year only.

Sambit Patra appointed chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation

  • BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra has been appointed as the chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Key Points

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has recently approved the proposals of the Ministry of Tourism of splitting the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) into two posts of Chairman, ITDC and Managing Director (MD) ITDC.
  • The Appointment of Dr Sambit Patra as Part-Time Non-Executive Director and Chairman of ITDC for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • It also continued the tenure of 1990 batch IAS officer Ganji Kamala V. Rao to the post of MD, ITDC, till further orders.
  • Earlier, Patra had served as an independent Director of ONGC.

  • Rosaiah was appointed as the CM on September 3, 2009, after the death of then CM Dr Y S Rajashekara Reddy in a chopper crash on September 2, 2009. 
  • After he resigned as the CM, he was appointed as governor of Tamil Nadu between 2011 and 2016.

  • The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) since 7 December 1994, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. 
  • In 1996 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that 7 December was to be the International Civil Aviation Day.
