However, the partnership ended in 2016, and the award reverted to the Ballon d'Or, while FIFA also reverted to its own separate annual award The Best FIFA Men's Player.

- Argentina football player Lionel Messi (34 years) has won the men’s Ballon d’Or for a record seventh time.
- Messi led Argentina to the Copa America title in July after losing in four major international finals.
- The 34-year-old who is also the star player of Paris St-Germain football club, has won Ballon d'Or in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021.

- Apart from him, Barcelona's Alexia Putellas (27 years) won the 2021 women’s Ballon d’Or.
- Putellas is the third winner of the prize, following in the footsteps of
