Short Note on Idioms and Phrases

Today we will discuss various Idioms and PhrasesIdioms are words or phrases that aren't meant to be taken literally and usually have a cultural meaning behind them. Idioms and Phrases are a poetic part of the English language. A set expression of two or many words that mean something together, instead of the literal meanings of its words individually. 

1. Palm off (the blame)

Meaning

Get rid of; in the case of ‘blame’ being included, it means ‘to pass the blame to someone else by deceit.’

Usage

My peer is very good at palming off the blame on to her colleagues despite not sticking to his schedules.

Not to be confused with:

Palm someone off: Persuade someone to accept something by deceit

2. Foot The Bill

Meaning

 To pay all the costs of something

Usage

The tradition that the guy should always foot the bill is changing among progressive couples.

3. Have A Strong Stomach

Meaning

The ability not to be upset by unpleasant things.

Usage

The army men fighting a war have a strong stomach as they keep going despite seeing their comrades dropping dead in front of them.

4. Have An Eye On Something

Meaning

 To give a part of your attention to

Usage

The aides of Don Corleone always had an eye on their Boss’ son-in-law as he always behaved like one who would rat his family out.  

5. Eat One’s Words

Meaning

Retract what one has said, especially in a humiliated way

Usage

After Trump’s win, many Democrats ate their own words

6. Rack One’s Brains

Meaning

Make a great effort to think of or remember something.

Usage

Meg racked her brain for inspiration

7. Get Cold Feet

Meaning

To suddenly become too frightened to do something you had planned to do,

Usage
We're getting married next Saturday - that's if Trevor doesn't get cold feet! I'm worried she may be getting cold feet about our trip to Patagonia.

8. With A High Hand

Meaning

Arrogant or Oppressive (when it is about a ruler)

Usage

The Sultan ruled his subjects with a high hand.

Accusing some of his opponents of racism was a little high-handed coming from Trump.

9. Fool’s Paradise

Meaning

A state of happiness is based on a person's not knowing about or denying the existence of potential trouble.

Usage

They were living in a fool's paradise, refusing to accept that they were in debt

10. Missing/Seeing The Woods For The Trees

Meaning

Can’t see the big picture

Usage

Layla helped Dev see the woods for the trees, telling him that people calling him freak was only proof of his genius.
