Seismology Observatory

Why in News:

  • The Seismological Observatory was inaugurated at Udhampur, Jammu, and Kashmir by the Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.

key points:

  • The 153rd seismic station has been established at Udhampur, Jammu, and Kashmir under the initiative of the National Center for Seismology, Union Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • Udhampur district is situated between two seismic fault lines hence this observatory is important for collecting important earthquake-related data.
  • Earthquakes often involve vibrations in the Earth's surface and structures on it, and according to the National Disaster Management Authority, earthquakes are often caused by the release of transmitted pressure between moving lithospheric or crustal plates.
  • The National Center for Seismology, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring earthquake activity in the country with the aim of being able to accurately predict the timing of earthquakes.

Capacity Building Initiative of Department of Economic Affairs

  • The Capacity Building Plan has been prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs in collaboration with the Capacity Building Commission with an objective to enhance the respective capacity in the extended environment of all Ministries, State Governments, and infrastructure execution across the country.

key points:

  • As part of the capacity-building initiative, the training program has been started in both offline and online modes.
  • 9th, 5-day program on 'Public-Private Partnership' under Capacity Building Initiative of Department of Economic Affairs launched on 20th June 2022 with 37 participants in partnership with Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management (AJNIFM) at its campus located in Faridabad.
  • The objective of training under the Capacity Building Scheme is to upgrade the capabilities of the officers involved in planning, implementing, and implementing infrastructure projects through these training programs.
  • The training programs covered under this initiative have been designed with an aim to provide the necessary support in realizing India's infrastructure vision through the successful implementation of key infrastructure programs like the National Infrastructure Pipeline, National Monetization Pipeline, and PM Gatishakti Master Plan.

Prime Minister's National Apprenticeship Fair

  • Prime Minister's National Apprenticeship Mela is organized by Skill India in 10 districts of Odisha.

key points:

  • More than 36 sectors and more than 500 trades and more than 100 companies participated in the fair to provide employment opportunities under the Prime Minister's National Apprenticeship Fair.
  • The main objective of this program is to encourage employers to hire apprentices from these target districts and help them identify the right job roles while building their capacity through strong skill training.
  • Under the Prime Minister's National Apprenticeship Mela, candidates will be provided a certificate recognized by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), which will ensure increased employability, giving them an opportunity to become entrepreneurs in their respective domains.
  • Organizations participating in the Prime Minister's National Apprenticeship Fairs were provided an opportunity to meet potential trainees and select candidates on a common platform, as well as small-scale industries, having at least four employees, an opportunity to hire apprentices in this program

One Nation One Ration Card Scheme

  • Assam has become the 36th state/UT in the country to implement the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC).

key points:

  • One Nation One Ration Card scheme has been successfully implemented in all 36 states and union territories, making food security implemented across the country.
  • One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme was started by the Government of India in the year 2019 with the aim of tackling the problem of food security.
  • Under the One Nation One Ration Card scheme, a beneficiary can get his quota of food grains anywhere in the country, keeping his ration card independent from being registered anywhere.
  • Another aspect under the One Nation One Ration Card Scheme is the 'Mera Ration' mobile application which has been launched to get the maximum benefit of the One Nation One Ration Card scheme, currently, this application is available in 13 languages.

National Intelligence Grid (NetGrid)

  • The tenure of the Chief Executive Officer of the National Intelligence Grid has been reduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Intelligence Grid has been transferred to the Border Security Force.

  • This year, Mr. Ashish Gupta was appointed as the CEO of NATGRID, Ashish Gupta is a 1989 batch IPS officer.
  • NATGRID is an online database that aggregates information from more than 20 organizations in the fields of telecommunications, tax records, banks, immigration, etc.
  • The National Intelligence Grid (NetGrid) project was launched in the year 2009 after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
  • The objective of the National Intelligence Grid is to provide access to data held by central agencies such as IB, RAW, and others on a secure platform for counter-terrorism investigations.

MoU to convert Indian Navy personnel into Merchant Navy

  • MoU signed between Directorate General of Shipping and Indian Navy to convert Indian Navy personnel into Merchant Navy.

key points:

  • The main objective of this initiative is to benefit the retiring Indian Navy personnel and provide them with an opportunity to work on merchant ships.
  • The agreement provides various options to the personnel of the Indian Navy ranging from certification of NCV ships and foreign going ships.
  • Under this scheme, Radio Officers of the Indian Navy can obtain a Certificate of Competency as General Radio Operators of Merchant Navy ships and Deck Sailors of the Indian Navy can convert to Merchant Navy Deck Rating by becoming part of Naval Surveillance.
  • The scheme aims to envisage ratings and maritime service experience on Indian Navy or cargo ships based on acceptance of training imparted by the Indian Navy to its officers and certificates issued by the Indian Navy.

Type 1 diabetes

  • Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and management of type-1 diabetes have been issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (IMCR), this is the first time the ICMR has issued guidelines specifically for type 1 diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas stops producing insulin completely and this hormone increases or decreases the absorption of fat and other body cells by the liver to control the level of glucose in the blood.
  • Type 1 diabetes is the opposite of type 2 diabetes where the body's insulin production is either reduced or the cells become resistant to insulin.
  • Type 1 diabetes is found mainly in children and adolescents.
  • Type 1 diabetes is much more severe than type 2, when a person with type 1 diabetes stops taking their insulin, they soon die as the body produces zero insulin.

Senior diplomat Ruchira Kambojo

  • Ruchira Kamboj is a 1987 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service and is currently serving as the Ambassador of India to Bhutan, Ruchira is the first woman Ambassador of India to Bhutan.
  • Prior to her assignment as Ambassador to Bhutan, Ruchira Kamboj has served as India's High Commissioner to South Africa and India's Ambassador or Permanent Representative to UNESCO.
  • She will succeed T S Tirumurti as the Indian ambassador to the UN.
